While I was looking through the 1983 catalogue I noticed that the black and red Thunder series instruments looked like they have "light oak" backed necks, at first I thought it was just some highlighting on the images.

I then found this picture of a red Westone Thunder I (clear-necker)

These Clear-Necker instruments seem only to be available in 1983, I have a 1984 Thunder bass that has the neck fully painted, although exceptions seem to be the rule for the Westone models, so this may be proved wrong.
