I have a black MPC X-310 that I bought new (I am the ONE and ONLY owner) in around 1977. I was wondering if the serial number could help me nail down the production date.

I also have a natural finish X-940 that I bought off a buddy (he was the original owner) in the middle 80's. I know the model was only built from 80-82, but again was wanting to get the exact year.

I'm brand new (as you all can tell) but have been an MPC owner for almost 30 years. I appreciate any help you can give me.

Very possibly. There are a couple of different numbering systems- most likely if the first digit is a letter then the next two are year- or if it's all numbers the first digit may be the last digit of the year. However, take this with a grain of salt, we're not 100% sure of all of them.

Welcome! Folks with such good taste will surely find others of like mind around here.

Both of the serial numbers are 5 digits that start with 1.

That's interesting, it confirms what I've heard that the serial numbers didn't start out with the first digit indicating year, but switched to that system. If the guitar had just appeared somewhere, I'd have been tempted to think it was an 81- so it's great to have you the first owner to confirm that it was at least made in 77 or before.

Well, I didn't have any luck with the rivercityamps site.

Any other suggestions?

No other sources I know of. I used to think all the Electras of the 80's followed the YMMxxx rule, but that seems pretty unlikely with a 5-digit serial. What are the second and third digits? If they're not between 01 and 12, that pretty much lays that theory to rest.
