I was surfing the web the other night and saw all these people posting about their callouses. I just thought that you suffer the pain to get them and then keep them by playing. I've used Finger Ease on occasion and if a callous cracked I've used an emory board or sandpaper to lose the crack. These guys had all kinds of formulas and voodo for theirs.
Someone said Clapton soaked his fingers in Witch Hazel after performing. Other people were using Super Glue.
Anyone on here gotten into this stuff?

I agree with you. When I started back in the mid 70's I sometimes used Finger ease on those barb wire starter strings until I my finger tips got hard enough. And that was by playing. (Lighter guage strings work to)

I use some alum mixed in some warm water to soak my fingertips--in 2-3 days I usually have enough callous started that I can play and build them up.

The other thing that's worked is a bass with roundwound strings, they don't cut into your fingers like the plain strings do.

Super glue is wonderful stuff; I have some in my medical kit for hunting trips as it makes a very good substitute for sutures...(and MUCH less painful!!)
At 50, my fingerpads are pretty much bombproof but even earlier, I never saw the need to do anything other than practice to harden them up! I use bridge cables on my guitars these days (12-56s) and can play all night with no adverse effects; practice, practice,practice....
