I recently purchased this for $60 from my favorite local shop. It was in the project pile in the back.

The only lead I have as to waht it is are the pickups, stamped Maxon. This points towards a Greco or Ibanez, more likely Greco. I've dated the pickups to August 1973.

It came in somewaht rough shape. Yeah, it's beat and worn to hell. The pickups arte both dead (but I'm keeping them), and the tone ot's shaft was broken off. One tuner post was missing as well. Most other damage is purely cosmetic.

I have gotten most of the parts I want. I got a DiMarzio SDS-1 for the neck position (since it's standard strat sized on this copy) and an MMK45 for the bridge, along with black knurled knobs for a total of $5. Yup, I mean the pickups and knobs were $5. I also got a push/pull tone pot (funny coincidence, it's MiJ) to tap the MMK45. I'll need to get a Strat type bent plate bridge to fit the MMK, but I'll be saving all original parts. I am gonna save a buck and stick with the original tuners and just replace the missing post. I'm also planning on a Kahler string lock (since they sit behind the nut and do fit on this guitar) to hold the tuning better. You'd think that's more expensive than new tuners but actually it isn't, for me anyhow. Here are some pics from whaen I got it and mock-up of where it's headed.

Cool project.

Just say "NO" to the string lock hardware! At least try it without, first.

Dummy me, put this in thewrong forum...been gone too long.

Can I ask why you say no to the string lock?

That aside, I plugged it in today (only the DiMarzio and volume pot are wired) and it works, so the switch and jack are both good, as is the volume pot.

I agree skip the kahler. It can seriously weeken the head/neck joint. I would go with locking tuners (prefereably Sprezel). But why worry without a tremelo anyway?

Plenty of guitars are played in tune every day without locking anything. If the guitar is set up well, and maintained well, a locking system is not necessary. It's going to have a hard tail anyway, so you really don't need to lock it. Put it together and if you like the way it feel and sounds, then put some money into a pro setup job. If the nut is cut correctly, and everything is adjusted properly, you should have no tuning problems.

I really won't know if it's going to help or not for a little while because it still isn't ready for strings let alone are the tuners even attached.

If those are vintage size, vs 10mm, let me know I have an extra set. Yours for shipping cost.

As an update: the MMK45 was junked, so the bridge spot has been filled with a Gotoh humbucker. Also got a Kahler copy bridge. Thing plays surprisingly well!

Nice find. People either love or hate thinlines. I tend to think they are nice looking. Good score.

I like the neck on that one and it should make a fine player without the trem but you are the player so do what fits your style best. Looking great so far. Will be awaiting the final product. Merry Christmas 8)

Now I don't know about that! I'll take some new pics in it's completed state.
