So other than the obvious headstock shape, (pre-77, correct?), can a specific year be put to the x410 I recently acquired?

Serial is on the headstock sticker and reads 10192. I am somewhat surprised the model was penned in, and is still very legible.

I don't think the serial number on your guitar will help to date it. I believe around 1980 the numbers began to be traceable, and a 7 digit beginning with 0 would be 1980, beginning with 1 was 1981 etc. There are some 6 digit numbers too that I'm not sure of. I don't recall the discussions about whether the month of production was ever part of the s/n's.

I'm pretty sure the open book headstock puts you squarely (the shape of evil) in the serial number means nothing era.

The only guitars pre-1980 that can be dated are the ones with the F77xxxx type serial numbers stamped in the headstock like Ibanez used. F77 for example would indicate a June 1977 build date. The vast majority of these are found on Semi-Hollows, but I believe there are some exceptions.

The Foil Tags ARE USELESS for dating as far as I have found. Some of the MPC's have a date stamped on the Battery pull fabric (of all places!!) that seems to indicate the build date, not conclusive, but it is seeming very likely that's what the date on the cloth stands for.

On the bright side, its not like I've ever heard someone say that a '75 is better than a '73 for example. The guitars tend to speak for themselves. Enjoy it for what it is, Mike.

Thanks gentlemen. Believe me PE, it gets enjoyed very much for exactly what it is. The question about the date of build was partially curiosity but mostly for prudence sake as I am adding it to the homeowners policy.

Would it be accurate to simply state "early 1970's, mid-70's, 70's era" or the like? I'm not even sure of the years of build on an x410.

With the open book style headstock and trapeze tailpiece I would say 1974-76 as they went to wave headstock and stop tailpiece in or around 1977 and up. Without the digit being a letter A H etc it would most likely be a 76 but no way to pin it down for certain.Still a nice guitar no matter what the year.
