I just won this on ebay. Can anyone tell me the history etc of this guitar? What are the pickups etc like sound wise? Looks like it's in good shape.


Also if anyone spots a 90's 2000's Crate Electra Les Paul copy for sale, let me know via PM. I am after one of those too.

Welcome to the forums. That looks to be an early model Electra(maybe PCM(pacific coast music) but it could also be early SLM(St Louis Music). These were made in Japan and imported to US for sale. The pickups should be a single coil and will sound typical for the era. The pickups will however be extremely micro phonic if they have not been wax potted. You may also want to check the neck joint and look for issues there as well as these early models are prone to problems in the neck joint era which can cause action and intonation issues but not always. The early electra models were hit and miss quality wise so you may have a great one or a so so one. The later models of Electras after Mr Tom Presley came onboard were all top of the line but depending on the manufacturer of these early models quality can still be very good as well. I have an old Hondo with those same pickups. They sound pretty good.

Update: The guitar is a bit of a disaster. Shame.

The top E string is misaligned with fretboard/pickup (hanging off fretboard) and even pushed to the left of the roller it's way off. I have fret buzz over a lot of strings including open strings and it wont hold tune.

The pickups sound great though. The treble pickup cuts out when turned full and the knob turns freely.

So it's going back. Ah well! haha. It plays pretty good.

Shame you don't want to keep it, these sound like pretty routine fixes on guitars such as this, and are very easy to fix. If you still have it, look into doing the work, it's worth it to learn!
