I'm thinking of buying an Electra 2271 bass, serial number 15858. It has the "old" script logo and chrome pickup covers. Any thoughts on who manufactured and when? Value? THANKS

It has to be pre 1977 because the logo on the longnecker switched to the Peace logo by the 1977 catalog. I would guess made 1972-76. Most likely made by Fujigen-Gakki or Kasuga.

Are those manufacturers "lesser than" Matsumoku? Any guess as to the value of the instrument? (Seller is asking $165...)

No, I think most of the Japanese makers upped their game as time went on. The desirability of the Matt made Electra's has more to do with when they were made. $165 is a steel.
