Looking for help dating and finding manufacturer of my new 2271 Longnecker bass. I think the serial number is 15858, as it is printed on a sticker on the back of the headstock. Other details include Gibson-like, pearloid typeface logo on the front and leaf-style truss rod cover. Has chrome pickup covers. Thoughts?

unfortunately, the serial number on those is pretty meaningless for dating when it was made.

there were 6 known versions of the 2271 as seen here...
http://www.indysworld.com/guitars/Elect ... asses.html

the peace sign logo appeared in '75-'76 time range, and they started around '70-'71, yours would be version 3, so I would estimate '73-'74 as to when it was made, but there's no way to be exact...

I would agree with what McBrat said. By the 1977 catalogue the 2271 had the peace logo. From the model identification page I would guess that yours is the 2271 version 3 since it has the leaf truss rod cover. Post some pictures if you can and describe how and where you came across your new bass.

THANKS for the info. Any thoughts on manufacturer? I was told Kasuga or Fuji-gen or Matsumoku...?

Great deal -- saw it at a flea market here in Kansas City listed for $160. I'm a relatively new bass player, but it looked and felt like a quality instrument. Came home and researched via this site and the indysworld site and realized it was in fact a good deal. Tested it and found the bridge pickup was not working. Seller knocked price to $100 and I bought it, sent the pickup to be fixed. Repaired pickup should arrive early next week!

I only took a few shots when I was looking at it - the bass is now at my repair guy's who will install the pickup upon its arrival. ... Trying to figure out how to post them?

the earlier ones like that came from many diff manufactures, and there's not much in the way of proof. I know there are some other forums that say if it has the "Steel reinforced neck" or something like that on the neck plate its matsumoku, but it's just too hard to tell. if you had a large enough sampling of early guitars/basses across various MIJ brands from back in the 70's, you could look for similarities in routing techniques and style and try to make some assumptions from the findings, but accuracy would still be suspect.

Great deal at $150 though, no?

I think mine is a 72, based on the photo from the catalogue, as it appears the model bass in the ad has a leaf truss rod adjustment...
