Well, it was a good deal. :D Couldn't pass it up. It had sat in an attic for decades.

1980 "dot neck Vulcan".

Cleaning up very well!
The age on this thing has me smitten. The smell, the aged lacquer, the feel, absolutely amazing. You can't get this in a new guitar...

It's almost greenish brown in person, such a stunning color. However the back of the body is a deep brown! But the back of the neck is the same color greenish brown! Anyone have an explanation for that?

Overall it's in excellent condition. Barely any wear on the frets, a few small dings here and there.

To my delight it has an MMK53 in the neck! YEAH! My fav pickup. :D The other is an old Carvin. I'd like another matching MMK53 is anyone is willing to part with one.

The wiring is a little jacked up, I need to figure that part out.

nice. some woods yellow with age, giving a different look to any stain it may have. I used a blueberry stain on pine before, and it's nicely blue at first, but then over the years as the pine aged, it turned green.....

OMG .... that is SO fine!! That colour really blows my skirt up, eh... the only thing I don't like so much is that line of knobs; but that is a glorious guitar!!

Was there a reason for the controls to be laid out like that? Given that this layout appears only on the MPC Electra models; no other Matsumoku guitar has it, I just wondered if anyone knows what the rationale was?

Umm John, the Vulcan is an MPC guitar!

:D "Blows my skirt up" made me laugh, John!

I know, this color does something for me, it's absolutely gorgeous to me. It screams 1980!

I still need a good bridge pup, that MMK53 bridge or another that looks like it. I want to match my MMK53 neck.
Was thinking of putting the 53 neck into the bridge position, and an MMK45 that I have in the neck. I love MMK45 neck pups.

IF I would go with a Dimarzio, which one would be closest to an MMK53? Anyone have experience with Dimarzio? I only know of the the Super Distortion...

I don't know there are so many new Dimarzios (and Duncans for that matter) out right now. Maybe an Andy Timmons model? Don't think the tone would be the same though. Check for something around 10-12K and ceramic magnet. SD would be a bit hotter, but I gotta say, they sound pretty good (especially a non-potted original one with the square tabs).

Reminds me I need to fix mine.

Check on ebay you might find you an MMK. If you are patient you might get one at a reasonable price.

Or, throw in a George Lynch Mr.Scary from mrscary.com . A bit pricey but they sound good.

What's the difference between 45s and 53s?

We're not too sure, actually. Both are ceramics, windings are different. The sound is more aggressive to my ears. More bitey and full like the earliest 45's were, just a bigger sound. Not for everyone.

Well, I put the MMK53 neck in the bridge, and I used a neck 45 for the neck.

Sounds really good! :hyper:

I cleaned all the brass, the frets are no longer rusty but shiny, and the guitars absolutely gleams. I'll get pics when it's sunny out.
