I have a friend who worked with SLM for many years. He's a pro guitar player who originally did some consulting and testing with SLM on product development. He would try out prototypes of new products on gigs and studio sessions, and then provide feedback to the company about the equipment. He was playing several nights a week with a band, and doing recording sessions too. He's a great player with a very good ear for tone, and a very practical perspective on what working musicians need in pro equipment. The company rightly valued his input and they ultimately had a long and mutually beneficial relationship.

During this time he had opportunity to play the MPC compressor module and found that he liked it quite a bit. Problem was, he did not play an MPC guitar and was not going to switch to one. I think at the time his main axe was a '59 Strat. So the guys at the SLM electronics shop built this box for him. It's an MXR Phase 90 box, with an MPC Compressor module inside. I recently had it on my bench and I took the opportunity to snap a few photos. Hopefully some of you will find this interesting.

The MPC circuit board just fits in the box. The attack switch has been brought out to a top mounted mini toggle, and the knob is from a "vintage" Crate II amplifier. The orange indicator dot matches the Phase 90 box perfectly!

Did they just solder wires to the MPC edge connector and then cover it with some electrical tape?

Yes, that's exactly what they did.

The flying leads are tack soldered to the edge contacts. Jumpers between the switch pads over to unused edge contacts to accommodate the off board switch. Could just have easily taken the flying leads directly to the original switch pads, but whatever. It works!

I'd love to hear what you come up with for modding MPC stuff... please keep us posted if you heat up the soldering iron.

Thats great stuff. A hidden treasure indeed. Keep it simple and if it works don't fix it. Would be great to hear a fea sound clips of it as I bet it does sound good indeed.Thanks for giving us all a chance to check it out.
