I bought this P-bass from a guy on Craigslist and I'm trying to identify it. The serial number on the headstock is 012226. I can't tell much else, it says made in Japan on the neckplate. It is sunburst color and looks like a fender P. Thanks for any help!

Here's a link to pictures of the bass... http://s1083.photobucket.com/user/crgan ... t=3&page=1

X630S - it is in the index of models list, but the ones in the pics are different colors ("S" is for the "stained" model).

Thanks, I was thinking that had to be it but I was confused because of the comments regarding the parts. Any help on year? I'm confused at this...

-The early 1981-2 series has a black pickguard and brass knobs
-The later (1983+) series has the pickup set flush in the body with no pickguard and knurled black speed knobs, like the rest of the Phoenix models.

Mine has a pickguard but also came with the speed knobs. Could somebody have changed them at some point to the speed knobs you think?

Appreciate the help!

I am no expert on the basses... I am not a bass player, although I did own one of the later versions of those without the pickguard a while back. It was a nice bass too (seemed to be, and I am certain the person that has it now is probably enjoying it).

Yes, though, I believe in all likelihood someone just replaced the knobs. Brass knobs were in fashion for a while and then kind of went out of fashion, so your bass likely evolved as an owner changed the knobs to something they liked better. Happens all the time. If you are a player, don't sweat it. Nothing to worry about as a player.

If you collect you might have a challenge finding a used set of those exact brass knobs, although if you are patient they do come up from time to time. I recently had a guitar missing those knobs and opted for a similar looking inexpensive gold finished knob from china off of ebay. It "looked" right and that was all I was after. It wouldn't fool a collector and was not intended to do so. They were just inexpensive new chinese gold metal knobs that looked right from a few feet away. There are some repros out there too that are much closer, if not exact, but were prohibitively expensive for me. I would not lose any sleep over it.

Many players comment on liking them as much as a real Pbass, which is pretty remarkable given how good of a value they are today.

if you click the all Basses link and scroll down, you will find it. as far as I've found, there wasn't any newer versions of the x630S. just this one.
