Hi,
Can someone please explain to me how the two toggles ("color switches") located just below the volume and tone control knobs work on the non-MPC Les Pauls (X210, X220, X230, X240)? Is there some technical information out there regarding wiring, pot specifics, etc.? Thanks.

Aren't they coil tap and phase reverse switches? IF so, coil tap cuts the humbuckers down to one coil each for a thinner sound, and phase reverse puts the bridge pickup out of phase with the neck pickup for that characteristic 'quack' sound.

The X-240 was my first electric guitar - a gift when I graduated grade school in 1983. My dad bought it used for $250. I was curious about the electronics at that time so I wrote to St. Louis Music Co. to ask. I may still have the letter they sent back tucked away in the house somewhere.

Anyway, the letter stated that the toggles were low pass filters. They are not coil taps or phase switches.

interesting. so they were much the same as a varitone switch- bringing different capacitors inline as low-pass filters- like a tone knob but with different cutoffs depending on capacitor value.

X240's show up on ebay, as do other Electra LP's, you might keep an eye out.
