Even though this is not an Electra, it's a kissing cousin

Just picked up a Westone X-750 Pantera bass


With a chunk missing from the headstock...unfortunately the chunk did not come with the bass


Have any of you attempted a repair like this? I picked up a piece of maple and was planning on grafting a new piece on by smoothing the broken part of the neck flat then gluing the new piece on using wood glue, clamps and possibly a few small dowels. Any tips?

I would consider cutting it back far enough so that when you redrill the tuner hole you're drilling into all-new wood, not drilling through the seam.

Really? The good thing about the break to me is 3/4 of the tuner hole, especially the load bearing part is still intact. This is a very small headstock for a bass X. It's going to be very tough taking off a lot of wood. I'm actually worried about by skills on this repair...there's a matching neck up on fleabay for 20 bucks I'm watching Any thoughts on this bass? Is it worth the effort?

Panteras are good instruments, they have much of the developments of the Phoenix/Spectrum, they were the successor with the new body style.

I would go for it- get the neck!

as for repairing it, rather than using dowls, i would be more inclined to try using a biscuit joiner to do the repair... i don't know for sure that this is possible, but the theory of how the joint works seems like it would be much stronger than dowls and probably wouldn't require cutting the existing headstock material back too far...

although, if you can get a new neck for cheap... that sounds like a lot simpler solution.... unless you are up for the challenge

The biscuit joiner looks interesting, but I'm not ready to buy specialized tools...yet Hopefully I can nab that neck cheap THEN, experiment with this one.

I bailed on the auction when the price started climbing, with shipping it would have exceeded the value of the guitar IMHO. So, I went for the simple repair, with a piece of maple, some gorilla glue, 2 small dowels and some clamping. So far so good. Final sanding, filling and paint tomorrow.

excellent! should be good as new!

in my experience duplicolor brand auto touch up paint in universal flat black color is a perfect match for that odd satin-finish neck paint.

yes looks like a fine bit of work

The repair is rock solid and I think it looks pretty good too. Man, I like bringing old instruments back from the great beyond, that's 7 or 8 this year already! I've almost built up enough confidence to build another one

Thanks guys, she plays and sounds grea.

Pretty happy with this and I think it means my single pickup Westone bass may find it's way to the local craigslist

I've completed some fairly major repairs in the last year and I'm really starting to believe that no guitar is beyond saving. The good news with repairing and learning on all these guitars is that my guitars rarely go out for repairs anymore
