Okay... I bought an '83 X110 in okay shape from a fellow on the Bay for $97 with semi-local pickup.

It's noisy as hell when plugged in. I open up the back and I see this:

Uh, I've never touched a soldering iron to a guitar in my life, but SHOULDN'T THAT OUTPUT JACK BE GROUNDED?

Anybody want to give me an idea on how to do it? There are no loose wires in the guitar. It's like somebody stole the grounding wire. From what I've read, I buy a grounding wire, solder it to the output jack, then solder it to each pot in turn?

I bought a soldering iron today and I'm prepared to learn on this $97 guitar. While I'm at it, I'm going to change out the jack to a new Switchcraft.

looks like the grounding wire is there and goes to the center of the pot....
can you get an even closer shot?

here's how it should probably be wired....

I agree with the diagram. The ground wire would also most likely be good grounded to the foil tape at the screw also. Keep us posted.

That's probably a dual core wire coming off the socket, which is grounded to the middle of a pot casing. Everything looks OK but you may have a cold joint in there somewhere which needs to be found and dealt to.
