Is there a difference in volume and tone pots? Or does the lug being grounded to the case and capacitor placement determine the difference?

generally, the one with the lug grounded and cap attached is the tone pot.

the volume (if basic wired) would have a lug completely open...

The volume and tone pots are usually the same value (ie 250K or 500K ohm). Typically single coils use a different value than a humbucker because of the high frequency roll off.

I picked up 3 250K Alpha pots, a pack of .020 caps, some shielding tape and nut grease, plus several other items from a garage sale and was just wondering whether or not it mattered if they were used for volume or tone.
