Anyone have any tips on how to repair a fairly big gouge on the corner of one of those brown plastic Electra cases? I was thinking fibreglass repair kit. Any thoughts?

Good idea use the mesh cloth and saturate with resin then apply resin to case and cloth to case to fill the void would look great but should be permanent.

Yup sounds like the route to take. Bought it on fleaBay, seller intentionally hid the damage. It's so easy to be honest, too bad it doesn't come naturally to some people.

Shackleton, I bought a Ricky bass with hard case sight unseen for $300.00 on craigslist. I told seller I'll be there in 30 minutes as long as it's a Rickenbacker I don't care about condition. I get there, it's an old Fender case and inside, sure enough a Ricky 4001, deal!

When I'm home, I research it by serial numbers and features, turns out it's a 1967 Ricky 4001!!! This is a 10 grand bass in mint condition. It wasn't mint, but it was saveable. Painted with a brush, non original Fender bridge. After much more research, a full, proper restoration was going to cost me $2500-$3500, not being a bass player I didn't really want to do this, but out of respect for the instrument, I didn't want to do a poor restoration either.

Guys on the Rickenbacker forum smelled blood and started making offers from $600-$2000.00! I finally sold it to a guy who had the ability to give it a full and correct restoration, I sold it to him for $2200.00 no case. Oh, and the case? It was a late 60's Fender case :-) Ended up making a $2100.00 profit just by getting lucky and all I wanted was a knockaround Ricky bass...still don't have one. LOL

As for weather checking, most vintage guys actually like it. Some spend hours trying to reproduce it in freezers and northern climates on their relics :-) And yes, you'll never see it on an Electra, not with two pounds of poly clear.
