Here's a long rant...

I was really surprised earlier this year to see a (mint) 2254 Super Rock go for over $1100 on eBay. Now there's one starting at $1475. My, my, my....

Recently, an X199 went for almost $600 with shipping, assuredly a high water mark for my fave Electra model, and this one was shy an original case and tremelo bar. I often hear that the Blue Burst is the uncommon color on these, though in my experience it's the Candy Red.

I believe all of these were advertised as mint, or ner mint. If you're like me you'll pay a premium price for a cherry guitar. But these prices... if this continues, yes, some people will really cash in, but more importantly it will drastically change things for us lil' ol' Electra lovers.

I'm certainly not opposed to folk profiting on selling guitars. I made my living at it for many years, and have been buying, repairing, and selling since the late sixties. But, the SLM collecting has always reminded me of the fabled "good ol' days," when you would find beautiful instruments in pawnshops, small town music stores, and the like (I bought a 12 sting Firebird in a restaraunt once!). The hunt itself was exciting, and the cost... well, more than reasonable, right?

I left the music business when it got to where I had to pay in the thousands for instruments, and the sit on them till sold. Eventually, it became a rich man's hobby, and repairs couldn't cover all my overhead, so I closed shop and moved on to other things... though I never stopped buying guitars. lol

Best grab your asses and hold on tight. ;-)

PS I just noticed a 2254 in Austin went for $475, which until recently I would have thought a very good price.
