Hm, what year outlaw? I gather that would be a Magnaflux pickup, black bobbins? WHat digit does the serial number start with?

I'm not sure if we know how to positive ID Magnaflux pups (pre-MMK) but most likely I have one or two that will fill the bill. It would be nice to find as much as we can to make a positive ID.

Hi, Thanks for the reply, im not sure of the year, I can probably get a serial number. I know it is one that came out of the one that has the 5 way rotory switch, the pickup that was in it had a gold cover and gold pole pieces. I Made another pickup for the bridge for a guy and I need to see how the original is wired up to work with the rotory switch. He sent the original pickup to me to copy but when I started to pull the tape off the bobbin to inspect the wiring the leads started coming with it, so I stopped, I am looking to buy one of my own to take apart, without messing it up to see the wiring. This way if i mess it up at least it is not someone elses I have messed up. I could have re-wound it I guess, but I would rather keep it in original condition. I'll contact him to get all the pertinant info. Thanks again, Ben. :D

You shouldnt have to take one apart to see how they're wired. Here's the diagram for the 5-way selector:

http://www.therathole.org/guitars/electra/slm3.html

What's not very clear in this diagram is that the top two wires coming in on the right side are to the pickups, the bottom one goes to the control cavity (volume pots, etc).

Magnaflux pickups in MPC guitars are usually color codes using very normal conventions. usually there's 3 wires- the black and white are signal and ground (sometimes the braided shield is the ground instead). The red wire is almost always a coil tap wire that's connected to the pickup between the two coils.

Sometimes there will be all four wires coming out of the pickup, and they're two wires each for the two coils. In that case what you want is to connect two of the wires, attach the coil tap wire to that and use the other two as signal and ground. But this is all perfectly normal conventional wiring for a pickup.

Another option not (to my knowledge) found on MPC guitars is the ability to switch -one pickup- so that its coils are parallel or series, in phase or out. This is a much more fancy way of modding pickups than what most people ever deal with. The normal way for humbuckers is series out of phase, and that's how they're wired in an MPC.

I hope this helps- if not, let's talk, because you shouldn't need to disassemble another pickup to get this info.
