I have looked at the Roland VG's in the past and have to say they were attractive, but couldn't make the financial commitment for a purchase at the time;

I have a Roland GP-8 that I purchased new from Music Emporium in 1987; used it this past Saturday at a blues jam session; also have a BOSS GT-10 which was a gift from my significant other this past Christmas; I'm still learning how to use it; I will keep and use them both.

Also was the lucky winner in the Electrafest of an Alesis GuitarFX which is similar, but in a more compact floor unit - it also works well.

I use the the GP-8 as a rackmount in conjunction with a Korg DTR-1 tuner because it has no tuner;

The GT-10 and Alesis units both have built in tuners.

I use an Alesis QS-6 for any synth work!! I have enough trouble with pick up selectors on guitars to even think about a guitar synth; and besides, you cannot do "Whiter shade..." on a guitar synth and make it sound 'right", eh!! :lol:

I've probably spent as much or more on Amplifiers as I have on Guitars... It doesn't help that I haven't been able to let go of any of them since 1981. If you've seen the 'gear' thread, you know I like tube amps, love the Mesa Mark line, own a Mark IIb, Mark III in Hardwood and a Rack mount Mark IV.

You have to ask yourself what role that amp will serve. Does it have to keep up with a drummer volume wise? Does it need to be light and portable? What do you want to spend? The trend lately is low tech single channel amps, using the 'less is more' philosophy. My Marsh Princeton Reverb clone was around a grand assembled and shipped. It has a 12" Jensen (instead of the stock 10") weighs around 30 lbs and is loud enough to keep up with a drummer. I've always wanted to try one of those THD heads that you can experiment with different preamp/power tubes... sounds fun!
