Saw Styx in Nashville at the Ryman last night. They played the music from Grand Illusion and Pieces of Eight albums (if you know what an album is), in the same order as the original recordings.

What a great rock show. The Ryman only seats like 2500, so it's a small venue. Tommy Shaw and James Young are just killer guitar players, and Shaw still has the pipes too.

For anyone that loves this kind classic rock this was a memorable show. They started the show with a video of a guy putting the Grand Illusion record on the turn table, and after they finished the last song on that side, the video came up and the band asked "what do you do next?" TURN THE RECORD OVER!!

This was one of the last tour stops, but if they do another go-round in this format, I would recommend it to anyone that likes Styx.

FWIW we saw Allison Kraus leaving the show near the end with her family. Tommy Shaw has a new bluegrass album, made me wonder if Allsion was a contributor??

I saw the 'Paradise Theater' tour... which was kinda foofy. Pseudo Concept material that is melodic and nice to listen to, but a bit boring live. Are there any youtube clips out there? (I guess I could go look...) Congrats, I haven't seen a show in years!

Dennis DeYoung wanted them to be more theatric, with more mainstream ballads and top 40 pop. That's what I've read was the reasons for the breakup of the band. This show was rock, no wimp ballads.

Saw them October of last year in Charleston, SC during the second round of the REO Speedwagon tours that featured various opening acts. Night Ranger opened this show followed by STYX, but REO was really in top form and blew both acts off the stage. I was able to move up close to the right side of the stage and could not believe the arsenal of vintage guitars Tommy Shaw brought along sitting a few feet away. I know he is quite a collector. These retro rock shows are so well worth the ticket price (although I won these free from a radio station), hopefully we will see more acts hitting the road again. The "play the whole album" is a great concert format too...would love to see Boston put something together and do this.

It would just be Tom Scholz and some traveling hacks... Brad Delp committed suicide a few years ago.

As I said to a friend of mine recently, "If Brad freaking Delp couldn't think of a reason to live, what hope do *I* have?"

Yea I agree Jack, a "Boston" tour would be Tom Scholtz with a great sound, playing Barry Goudreu's signature licks, with who ever else the could round up.

Just cause a guy can sing great, and inspires us, doesn't mean he's go the most stable psyci. From my limited experience, some lead vocalists are analagous to that crazy, psyco chick-girlfriend that we've all had that was mind blowing in bed, but not the most balanced load on the scales. Great talent, but not wound too tight. It's a shame about Delp though.
