After lot's of waffling back and forth between my ultima and this guitar, I finally decided that I liked the versatility of the EQ more than the MPC. Both guitars felt and played just about identically (in fact the serial #'s were only 40 apart) so I had to rationalize selling the Ultima. I figured I had another couple of MPC guitars so... that was that. I'll be keeping the X270. They sure did look nice together though.

Yes..... The Ultima has been sold. A bittersweet thing in every way.

Hello there, new forumite here!
I am the fellow who purchased your 1980 x270 Workingman.
I joined the forum to thank you for the guitar. It works great, just needed a bit of wire work. All the electrics work, except I can't turn off the boost (better than the alternative). The phase shift even works after all these decades. All that needed work was a new nut (synthetic bone) and a new jack, which I have yet to get.
Makes a great addition to my guitar family, and a perfect introduction to Electra guitars.
I didn't even know what they were prior to spying it on the 'bay. I'm very happy that, thanks to you, my first Electra experience was a positive one. I would definitely buy another Electra, and if I did it would probably be from you.

Thanks for the kind words - and welcome to the forum. There's lots of very good people and information to be found here. I must admit I was a little dismayed to learn you were having issues with the X270 because I guarantee all was working fine when I removed the batteries. Speaking of which, usually an issue like boost remaining on all the time means you've wired from the battery to the output jack incorrectly. I don't recall exactly, but I think the jack is a 3 lug type. If the boost is on all the time, the batteries are probably draining all the time - plugged in or not. Here's alink to some info on this subject, and if I remember correctly, there may be even more info on the site. Hopefully someone else will chime in here. viewtopic.php?f=26&t=3820&hilit=input+jack+wiring
and here's another
viewtopic.php?f=15&t=5536&hilit=battery+on

Not having the boost acting properly sort of negates the impact of that guitar. Hope this helps and keep us informed.

Welcome to the Electra Forums. This is indeed a wealth of knowledge on Electras here in the forums. You will enjoy that model and I hope you can enjoy other models as well. The entire Electra line are all great instruments. Enjoy the Electra and welcome.

Good news everybody!
After a few days of tweaking and adjustments (and solder. So much solder.), the Workingman is once again in perfect condition. Ah wiring, how relaxing.
I reset the action, and re-carved parts of the bridge my tech had left jagged.
The input jack has bee replaced with a new stereo one from Stew-Mac, and the strings are now tens. I even managed to get the bridge to remove some buzz using a soft-lead pencil.
Tons of fun, these old Electras.

Only the X280 and X290 are Workingmen. The X270 was the 'Powered EQ'. Get the full story here:

The Powered EQ eh? I honestly like Workingman better, but oh well.
Yes, Jead, the boost works fine.
Really enjoying what it does for my tone.
Thanks for taking care with it.

Yeah, they can't ALL have cool names huh! The Invicta is one of my favorite names, the Rock-n-Soul tele is probably my least fave. I do think its cool that the guitars all had Model Numbers and Names, the marking department at SLM must have been working overtime... Mike.

I know it's 2 years later, but you wouldn't happen to still have that X270?
