I do not know alot on these models. I have seen several come and go on the Bay but have never seen one up close and in person. You may be able to get some info from this link to the westone site http://www.westone.info/quantum.html hope this helps. The Westone headless Bass guitars seem to be nice Bass guitars. The Rail and the Quantum were made during the same time period I believe. I hope one of the Electrafest attendees this year will bring his examples of the rail bass. Hope to see you at the fest this year.

These lads are worth a visit as well...

http://forum.westoneguitars.net/

FWIW, I have heard nothing bad about the Quantum, rather it's all quite positive...

thanks. I found the page I ws looking for ... catalogue info...

anyway, I picked up a quantum bass that sort of had an artsy effect done to the finish. looks like it was sprayed with gray, then black over the stock black body, then it as caefully sanded off in areas (some down to the wood) to create a striped effect, ending up with 4 colors. wood, black, gray, black.

it's missing 2 knobs, pots and jack are loose. I haven' plugged it in yet... and has flat wounds on it! And t has EMG pickups in it...

I'm going to pull the electronics out of it and spray it back to a solid color... but do I go back to a stock color (black, red, white) or go with a totally new custom color...?

I think I'll leave the EMG pickups in it...

the neck feels wider like a pbass neck. I need to put a strap on it to get a better feel.

Well, seeing as it's no longer OEM anyway, I say go nuts and deal something spectacular to it!! Realise, too, that Westone.info has a spares section where I think you can get some of the hardware for a Quantum....

EMGs? Ugh. The original Magnaflux RBs would wipe the floor with EMGs! And yes, my Rail basses will all three be at the Electrafest! One of them needs a bit of repair, but it is still playable.

okay, so here's the beast...
the auction stated that it had been left in a studio for some years. someone forgot to come back and get it.... there was only one knob and all the pots were loose. EMG pickups as stated before... and it had flatwounds on it... I never even plugged it in to see how it sounded, but it was supposedly in working order....
anyway, it had a "custom finish" on it. over the original black, there was a layer of gray, and another layer of black, then it was sanded down to create the patterns seen here... even down to the bare wood to bring in a 4th layer...
I'm guessing the control area is a weak area on these? the front of the control area had some liquid plastic poured on it to strengthen it up, overtop the new finish... and it was actually a decent job of doing that.... since it already had the pups changed out and the finish was needing redone, I decided to take this one off the wall a bit since it's already partially there being a headless and all :)

anway, here's the pics after stripping out all the electronics....

I went back and forth in my head trying to decide what color to do it...
after checking what rattle cans I had on hand, I took out some white, gold (similar to gold top colored), and a dark metallic blue, and put them on the bench with the flourescent yellow and flourescent orange...

I put on a good first coat of white, to make whatever I chose really pop... but I kinda liked the white, so it made the decision harder...

but I had to make a choice...

hopefully it will not hurt my sales chances too much :) but it really looks neat with the dark fretboard and red markers....
need to let it dry for 2 days, and then it's time to put the electronics back... most likely with new pots.... and jack....

8) Looks good thus far. The markers go well with the color I think. Will be interesting to see when done. With a headless Bass that should look nice. Screams 80's Rock. Thanks for giving us a look.

The old paint job makes me think of the Batmobile... Good Luck, Mike.

I can't wait to see this thing, add black hardware and it would look like a halloween guitar with orange and black! Looks pretty wicked so far. In a good way. :D

And if you add a few drops of crimson paint, you could probably sell it for a bundle to some death metal kid!

well, I finally got the first coat coat of gloss on the neck and front of the body... using the waterbased version to keep the brightness of the flourescent orange :)

using a foam brush as spraying this stuff didn't work out to well, as it's quite a bit thinner

for the logo on the tail piece, I'm going to use white reflective vinyl, and I may use orange reflective vinyl for the "Quantum" logo on the body... if I'm going with flourescent orange, may as well go all out on the "flash" :)
