Found out you have or had one Jead. Perhaps you could comment here for a new member over there. I will crosslink this thread back there as he is not a member here at this time.

Any and all thoughts appreciated from all. I noticed we have very little here as far as scans, specs and etc. Hopefully an opportunity to add some knowledge here has presented itself.

I donated the X650jb at last years ElectraFest and they are solid, versatile Basses. When the neck Pickup(s) were selected it was noticeably quieter, so I do think the 'P' style pickups are considered Humbuckers, at least the dual coil, reverse orientation of the pickups have that hum canceling effect. Your friend seems interested in fixing the neck pickup, I would tell him that there are lots of 'P' style pickups out there and it might be easier just to replace it.

The most I've ever seen one of these go for is like $200, even in sparkling shape, so while they are sturdy, quality instruments, its not like we're talking about an heirloom or anything. I do recall liking the Neck pickup a lot, and thinking the bridge 'J' pickup was a little thin sounding and unremarkable... he may want to swap them both for something newer and more contemporary. It's never going to be worth a ton, so he may as well have some fun with it.

I can't remember exactly the knobs, but 1 volume, 2 tone sounds right. The micro switch is a phase reverse as has been pointed out in the Westone Thread. The Serial Number indicates a February 1984 build date, so one of the last guitars to wear the Electra name. I hope this helps, Mike.

Mike has pretty much nailed it. I've never needed to like at the wiring in my 2. It seems as if the problem may be in the neck pickup if he's only getting sound out of 2 strings.
