If you go this route, I would stick a rag in to catch any drips. It doesn't take much to make a difference though.

I just take off the knobs and hose down the sleeve. Fold a paper towel in quarter, punch a hole in the middle of it and stick it around the shaft to catch any overspray. Low tech, but it works for me.

Trying the easiest suggestion first, I went with what Jead said about just pulling the knobs. It worked great! Most of the dirt was in the toggle anyway. If if hadn't worked, I was just going to play it safe and take it to a pro. It's going to him soon anyway, just because I like to have my new stuff checked out and adjusted if need be.

There's really no easy way to deal with semi-hollow innards - but if you have to take them out for any reason, get some fishing line on a pot or two before you take them out so you can fish them back in.
