 Post subject: Westone site underway
PostPosted: Wed Nov 12, 2003 4:16 am
lo :)

Started on a Westone site - got pics of about 150 models and most of the specs. Done the front-end and I'll start filling it up in the next few days.

its here --> http://www.westone.giointernet.co.uk/
(just move the mouse over stuff to find the buttons)

I've tried to contact bicasaur a number of times to try to work together to update stuff - but no reply. He did a good job and his site is (was) the only Westone resource on the net. But it looks like he stopped adding and updating stuff in 2000.

his site is here ---> http://www.geocities.com/Paris/Lights/6961/westone/

The site i'm doing is just html and java (will take about 8 seconds to load with entry-level dsl connection). I opted for a Picasso theme to make it a bit of fun to design and use. Hope you enjoy it when its done and will help me out with errors / ommissions / gaps. Of course there's-no ads -no pop-ups or any other sad tat.

Bye
Emu :D

hi :)

238 models and counting - i had no idea so many different Westones were made - not going to do a proper site (it takes ages and i cant do/hate coding) - but will do a picture dump maybe with the specs for reference.

Start it next week unless something crops up.

Bye

That's quite a few models! There is no way I would have stuck to it had it been necessary to code the html by hand. There are 575 pages in the Guitar Gallery alone, counting only HTML and excluding PHP and CGI.

Both Mozilla and Netscape composer make HTML a breeze if simple pages are all that are needed. The later versions of both are pretty easy to use and is mostly WYSIWYG. Netscape v4.7 Composer is a good bit faster but not quite a feature rich as the later versions.

This entire site was done with Composer v4.7 and all the HTML is simple so that any v4 browser or above should have no problems and there's no MS specific code. The only thing I have relied on here that may exclude a few browsers is the Javascript. Composer has a few quirks and does at times generate some pretty sloppy code making it difficult to manually edit but all in all it has worked well enough to rely on.

Hi Emu!

I am good for the images. I know what you mean being a lot of work! I have been hacking at the format conversion for over three weeks now spending about 15 hours a week on it. And that is just a format change (but has already improved things under the hood here considerably).

I have tried in vain countless times to get in touch with this bicosaur fellow but ne'er a peep from him. I believe his interest in the Westones has waned in the last several years and for all intents and purposes the site has gone stagnant.

I have been in touch with a good friend of Tom Presley (over Westone at SLM at the time) and they have experessed interest in furthering the coverage of the Westones. Since that time I have not heard from them either. I guess the buck stops here, eh?

CD woudl be perfect but I would like to cover the postage if that is the route we go with it. I am pretty sure I can set up anonymous FTP here on the site if you have FTP capability. I also have an FTP server set up here at the house but am limited to 784K incoming. If the latter is acceptable I can set up and account here for you and send you the info to get you logged in. There still a ton of free space on my Quake 2 server drive.

Drop me a PM and let me know what works best for you.

Take Care!

Maybe I'm number two!
Pity Indeed!

Before you trash your research think a second. Somebody will miss it someday. I'll take a copy! Not for old glory or or misused credit either.
Someday it could get hooked up on someones Westone or Other Guitar site. Too easy too delete my friend.

My Westone LX is still sitting here waiting the right parts. And she's got company, the Greco HB 12 and the Electra (?) LP body with effects.
And others.

I would be happy to hold your research until some appropriate home is found. Not the Dustbin!!!

wtmpls

PS. I found this board researching the LP Style body with on board effects. Not being to sure about getting this message on, I found the Private Message link.

Thanks!

Postage not a problem, but download no way !!!

Wait a minute, what needs to be done?

I'm totally up for it. Better yet, now that I'm a teacher I have teams of students on the lookout for projects to build for there portfolios, if there's that much work to be done.

I know it is moving slowly (meaning me) but I have worked out a way to increase the disk space I am allowed considerably to make room for the Japanese Westones.

I have not had the chance to set up FTP at the hosting company yet. There was a bit of a flood disaster a short while ago and many of the servers had to be rebuilt. The ENTIRE server room was filled by a flash flood and all the bigger web servers (including the one this site is on) were just low enough to get the motherboards and raid cards wet. :eek2: It took two of us all night to bring up a skeleton layout of what was there before the "big dribble".

Things are just now getting back up to normal, with new controllers, server boxes where needed, and new drives/arrays installed. I should have several gig of temp space (weeks, not months) for uploads and any additional permanent space needed for the new sections.

The last thing I want to see happen is to see all the hard work Emu has put into gleaning information go to waste! I will shift priorities and try to get the FTP going in the next day or two.

If all are willing the "appropriate home" can be here and at least I have made the arrangements anyway.

It may take another month or so to realize it in complete as I seem to be putting out quite a few fires lately: Truck - dead waiting for replacement engine, Bike - in pieces being rebuilt, Server Farm - back up but not at 100% just yet, Disk array here at the house for site backup - waiting on four more compatible drives and SCSI controller. The list goes on, but at least life is never boring.

I am expecting the models section to be in the 300 meg range (image, html, and php files) when all is said and done. And to think, it all started out as a personal home page with a list of guitars I owned and info on them! :D

This place has definitely taken on a life of it's own and all of you here have become a force to be respected and ackonwledged.

I'll send a PM when the FTP is set up and ready which hopefully will be tomorrow. If I have to I can set up an FTP server here but it is limited to 784K bandwidth.

wonderful! if i can do anything to help facilitate, let me know.

if it is any help, I found that if the page is mainly supposed to be picture galleries with text, meaning thumbnails linking to larger pics, with text on each, it gets to be a bunch of work just coding the tags and links. to that end, i wrote a program to generate HTML pages with gallery/slideshow-style links. like this: http://www.nwlink.com/~paulcl/re5resto/

if that's useful, i'd be happy to send you a copy, or help such generation. or I can stand back and shut up real well too :) i spose the right way to do it would be some kinda database with page templates and such, but i don't know how ambitious you are planning.

If this becomes the new Japanese Westone home it will most likely be laid out much like the other label sections.

The templates are already there and all the prelim work is done. Now all I have to do is call a number of common PHP files from within the HTML and include the PHP image tables and it's done. What has been taking me so long is slicing all the images here. I had forgotten how many there are lurking in the models sections! :eek2:

There's a lot of ideas I have but my PHP is not quite up to par yet (pretty basic actually).

Matter of fact, getting things back on track will now move to the top of my priority list.

Looks like you have been busy building sites! If I have a chance I will post links to some that I have done or currently maintain (mostly bands and music related).

Till tomorrow.....

Emu,

FTP is still in the works. I have two sites at this hosting company and to enable FTP for this site both must be moved to a dedicated IP. There are still other options though.

I slapped together an ad-hoc portfolio of all the larger site attempts of mine. Some are not complete, and others have been somewhat crippled for obvious reasons. It was about time I put it together anyway.

I now have an additional 400 meg permanent space so there is once again room to grow.

Cool stuff! I like your attitude about supporting hardworking local gigging bands. Musicians need more support.

If there's anything I can do, let me know. If that means processing photos- clipping, resizing, compressing, etc, I'd be happy to help. Otherwise I'll be here with the rest of the cheering section.
