A variable coil cut is easy to wire... basically it's just the slider of the tone pot connected to the connection between the two coils of the pickup... no investment in parts necessary.

Exactly. Certain versions of the CS series came wired like this from the factory (using the tone pots). I had one about 10 years ago, another 4 years ago, and now wish I had never let go of the first one. The second is well loved where it went so I have no regret there.

There is one unusal thing about the arrangement on this Leslie though. With both pickups cut, one pickup it is the north coil active, the other pickup the south coil. It doesn't have much of an impact with gain, but clean it gives it just a touch more "Leo" if you know what I mean.

One thing is for sure, I am NOT going to get used to this neck, but it does make me appreciate the profile on my PEs for example. The Aria Pro IIs here have a very shallow "C" profile where this thing has more of a boat bottom profile if that makes sense. A little more rounded at the edges.

It does have a very nice 70's-early 80's vintage tone to it though. From Montrose (Rock the Nation) and Boston (Smokin) to early Whitesnake (Slide it in) and REO (Flying Turkey Trot).

Maybe I am just being too picky. Here is what my left hand tells me. The dimensions might be a little exaggerated but at least it's more a visual than words alone.


From what I can see and what I feel the necks on my faves such as the PE's, Pro Endorser, Westone Prestige, Aria SG, and PE-150 LP Jr. the proflile looks much like this. Rather shallow flattened C with little meat at the edges.


The leslie both by looking and how it feels has a bit rounder and deeper C shape with more meat at the edges, which is what I feel most. My PE-450 has more meat on the neck than the PE-R60 but the shape is still the same.

Am I nuts or is this enough to throw someone off?

The neck carve of the Leslie actually appeals to me. The Arai Pro II neck carve you show in your drawing is what I have been feeling with the CS-400. And coincidentally, the last few times I've played the CS-400, I wished there was a little more meat to the profile, so to speak, for my hand to wrap itself around. The Leslie neck carve looks more like my 1993 SRV Strat, which, with it's 12" fingerboard radius, and 1 11/16" nut width, is my favorite neck.

The feel of the Pao Ferro FB on the Strat is my favorite as well (side story, I had begun collecting Ironwood staues from the US Southwest and Mexico before I got the Strat, facinated by the wood and the artwork. Later I find out that Pao Ferro means Iron Wood, it is in the ironwood family. Serendipity ensued.)

Anyway, I seem to be locked in the 70's for the style of songs that I compose. I wish I would have paid more attention to the fantatsic lead guitar playing that was born in that era, so that I could play some of the blistering leads that I read you guys write about from time to time. I'm 55, and I'm running out of time, but I may yet succeed in my renewed endeavors at becoming a successful (i.e. paid) songwriter. And should I become famous in all this, and rise to level of perfoming live again, I'll be sure to have an Uncle Matt guitar or two in my sets for my international audiences to see!

After writing all this, I'm inspired to now go put the links to photos of my guitar collection over in the Member's Treasures forum (in part to show that even old dogs like me can still learn new tricks, like the proper place to post stuff - I put the links in this thread first, then edited them out. ).

Atlansia makes a similar rounded guitar neck... maybe even more extreme than the one on your Leslie (it feels more narrow than what your drawing shows). Funny eneogh, it's not uncomfortable to play. Anyway, my favor goes much more to the early 80's C shape... I guess it all depends what guitar neck you had on your first guitar.
