Hi all,
This is my first post in this forum. I acquired an Electra Phoenix yesterday with a few minor problems that any well used 23 year old guitar would have, mainly cosmetic, scratches swirl marks, dings etc. After cleaning it, replacing a potentiometer & jack and stringing it up, it played and sounded just great. The neck has got me wondering though. Did Matsomuko dye the rosewood necks to simulate ebony ? The neck on this guitar is kind of streaky, between black and brown. There is no real wear on the neck at all and the frets have very minor wear. It did come with the original ???hard shell case???? (seems more like a cardboard case) and was missing the original brass knobs, (came with black speed knobs). Any info would be helpful. Oh, does anyone know where I can get a set of the original knobs ? Thanks a million.

I think they did. I've seen some Spectrums with what looked like black dye that had worn to reveal the natural dark brown of the rosewood beneath.

But it certainly varied- some rosewood boards look really streaky and uneven- makes me wonder if some were dyed to cover this up. Others are a very even color. I suppose the wood supply must have varied from time to time... where does rosewood grow, anyhow?
