I looked through lots of brochures, and sites, and it'snot a teisco, then I thought I'd look at the Apollo line again as it has tunersidentical to my early Electra pbass, and look what I found...

Sure looks like it! Any other details similar to others in your collection?

no other similarities, and upon closer inspection, the tuning pegs are not totally the same. close though. I haven't had a chance yet to pull the pickguard off, but it appears to be a mahogany neck, and maple capped mohagany body from the chips I can see... but it seems light for that, so I won't know for sure til I rip into it...

it's 31.5" scale and has a zero fret, but it's got full scale thicker strings on it that don't fit into the nut slots, so they don't hit the zero fret currently

so tonight I pulled everything apart on it. no similarities found. the body is 2 slab mahogany. (My early Electra pbass is full ply.)

the fretboard and wood thumbrest were very thirsty, and both look a thousand times better with some oil on them.

I cleaned the pots, changed the jack, and re-did all the wiring with fresh wire an new solder. each pickup has an on/off switch. all electronics work fine.

tightened the truss rod and made the playability way better.

the nut had been replaced, but it wasn't filed low enough for standard guage strings to be able to hit the zero fret. fixed that.

I really like the shorter scale, and it sounds really good...

the bridge looks like it is original, but it ooks like it was mounted too high at the factory...... a previous owner had files some slots in the saddles to attempt to fix it, but the low E is still off the fretboard at about the 12th fret.

Sure looks like it could be the Apollo model 2268 from the 1972 catalog. It's hard to tell from the catalog shot, but it looks like a 2 tone sunburst where as yours looks 3 tone, also the catalog one looks darker. Still, this could just mean an earlier year which could also help explain the tuners.

the appollo one has a 3 way switch for the pickups, and mine has individual ones, and my headstock is all black.....

so, I scoured over all the catalogs on vintaxe.com, and I finally found one with the same shape, and it's my bass exactly.

same curved thumbrest and individual pickups, and 3 tone sunburst.... with black headstock.

the Brand is Dana.

it's on page 6 of the Dana catalog for those of you with Vintaxe subscriptions....

The other ones in the dana catalog look like the other Apollos as well....

Interesting, I've never even heard of Dana. Makes you wonder just how many companies slapped their brand on the same guitar back then

Could that be associated at all with Dana Sutcliffe that made the Alvarez Danas, and worked for St. Louis Music?

I have an Alvarez Dana Scoop, an I love it!

Dunno if there's any connection though......

I don't believe any relation to the Alvarez Dana, as this is about 14 years earlier....
