I think not. Keep in mind that there are others on this site that know way more than I do. However, every guitar or bass that I have seen or read abou that was definitely made by Matsumoku (I have five) and had a neck plate had at least "Made in Japan" on the plate as well as a serial number. Given that it has a gold neck plate which matches the other hardware, I doubt it is a replacement.

Well I am out of my depth on who made it. For someone who says they don't know much about guitars I would be interested in knowing why they think it is an Uncle Matt. Why not ask them?

I would say that particularly given the condition the starting price is a bit steep for a bolt neck LP copy. Keep in mind that many of them had single coil pickups in the humbucker housing. Given the gold hardware this may have been a more premium model though.

The reason I didn't ask is that when I found the ad, the bidding was over. The winner got the thing for $234 U.S..

In order to contact the seller, I needed to set up an account, which at the time I didn't want to do. I did just that today, and will send him a message after my 3-day waiting period expires.

The reason I ask is because I own one nearly identical (without all the little damaged places) and would like to identify the manufacturer. Mine has a neck plate that has nothing stamped on it as well. I'm sure there's a serial number on it somewhere, just not visible without disassembly. It came with a life-time guarantee, I still have the card I was issued upon purchase. It's a nice rig, there aren't any single-coil pick-ups pretending to be humbuckers on it, it sounds nice, plays like a dream, intonates and sustains extremely well, etc... . I really don't care what it's worth but I am curious and hope that it was made by Matsumoku or Fuji Gen.

Good question.... I think x-man can shed more light than I, but it is one of the early SLM Electras. I had the LP Bass of the same vintage. it's harder to tell who made what in those years. there were slight logo variations as well, possibly tied to which factory.... I think there is a post in the members area that may help as well.

as far as this seller, mostpeople selling an Electra automatically assume it was a Matsumoku product, but as we know, SLM Electras were sourced from multiple factories... but still built to the SLM specs per order... as SLM increased quality needs, the factories responded.

I wish I'd seen it. We should try to snag pics like that so they don't vanish with old ebay listings.
