I just shipped out a modification to someone as well (they sent me theirs, and I modified it and shipped it back). Those are $40 + $6 ship in US. These overdrives have to be the in working order and the ones enclosed in the beige plastic box with the raised writing stamped on it (not the epoxy brick with the sticker on it - that epoxy cannot be removed to modify without damage to the module).

I have one more pre-modded overdrive left. Same deal applies - $80 in the US incl shipping, outside US will likely have a shipping surcharge. Thank you.

Right now I don't modify other modules. They are more complex and would cost too much to change. The Fuzz and Tube Sound might be good candidates but I haven't had the time. These are more common in that epoxy brick format - and you can't easily do anything to those. The Tube Sound also just does not seem to do much. I think the fuzz sounds fantastic the way it is (they do vary a bit, some sound better than others). So why change a good thing?

Hi Thory,

You seem to be the man in the know so I was wondering if you could answer this: do you know if a phaser module can be modified to work as a flanger? Seems like it would be the same principle.

I got an X620 bass which I've turned into a Chris Squire replica (and when I learn how to post photos, I'll share) by reshaping it, refinishing it and updating the hardware. I have a phaser (black box style) but need a flanger.

Not too long ago a Google search lead me to a guy who had a schematics diagram of one of the MPC modules . . . don't remember which but do know it wasn't the flanger. You wouldn't happen to have a flanger you can diagram, either schmatic or assembly? I've got a few modules and I wouldn't mind converting one into a flanger. Give me a diagram, my soldering iron and a giftcard to Radio Shack and I'll be on it like white on rice!

I don't have schematics for the MPC modules. You might be able to find one for a floor pedal version of the Electra Flanger, phaser, overdrive, but I have not seen them for MPC modules. I am not saying they don't exist someplace, but if I new of them we would likely post links to them.

I would venture to say that changing a phaser to a flanger would not likely be possible. This is because the flanger circuit in addition to the phasing/filtering part of the design also has a delay aspect as well. I can't see something that complex being tacked on an existing phaser module and getting it to work. Maybe I am just not quite the "mad" scientist (or smart enough) to pull it off, but I would not advise it. It would be way too complex.

I would suggest catching one of these flanger modules when they occasionally come available on ebay or on this group. Post in the proper area that you are looking for one. You would be MUCH better off buying one that does not work and getting it fixed. a hint - most of them I have had do not work right and need repair - many don't work at all. The little tantalum capacitors are usually the culprits - so if you get one that does not work get those replaced. I have had to do this to mine. If it is beyond that, it is beyond me I am used to working with amplification circuits more than the filtering circuits - as well as typical guitar electronics. BTW - the flanger is a particularly good sounding one when working properly.

The MPC setup is pretty well a floor pedal stuffed into a guitar. The guitar provides the battery, input, output, footswitch (the black plastic "flapper" switch on the outside of the guitar), and the one potentiometer for the pedal (the 150K pot). It pretty well is the same otherwise. Those that feel very abitious can adapt a pedal design to do this - it just needs to use a 150K pot built into the guitar (technically I guess it doesn't, but why have a control on the guitar that does not do anything?).

The overall design is pretty advanced for its day. The effects were "true bypass" and the power is turned on and off by the input cable on the guitar. So if your battery keeps going dead unplug your guitar cable after use! I get mad when I forget to do so and find that next time I use the guitar I have to put another 9V in there.
