Ok –after all these years – stuff I never noticed before –

Looking at the 1977 Electra models brochure / catalog

Brass nut and sustain block / ingot is referenced on pages 5, 6, and 20;
Pictured on pages 4, 7, 18, 20;

MPC models pictured on page 8: X350 on left with brass nut? The other ones appear to be plastic.

Interestingly enough, the MPC X Models displayed on page 9 have no mention of this;

clearly shows the brass nut, but can't tell about the block under the bridge, and yet does not mention either; the smaller picture at the bottom shows the earlier style headstock and what appears to be a plastic nut.

I got one of the 77 catalogs when I bought my MPC new and have read the thing a 1000 times and not noticed that. For some reason I thought it was the truss rod nut. I was never really into the Outlaw series. So, did the brass nut come out on the Outlaws and then to the later models of MPC's or just fade out? I've never played a guitar with a brass nut. Any of you members got one of these and what does it sound like verses a plastic nut?
Also, the catalog said the mpc's came with modules 1 and 3, mine came with a mpc#1phase shifter and mpc#9 octave ( which I didnt like much so I bought the mpc#3 treb/bass expander. Which the guys at the music store were proable playing around with it and switched them out and left it that way. They had a rack with all the effects modules and a display card up front by the register.

Besides the very good action and playability, I was hooked on the brass hardware after a test run; also purchased the compressor, but the sustain - when needed - is phenomenal. Also seems to enhance an EBow.

I think that when the brass hardware was introduced for the Outlaw series it carried over to the existing MPC models; it could have also been the other way around, used on the MPC models and then on the Outlaws when they were first introduced as a new model line - but at any rate IMHO that was about the time this hardware started showing up; I guess only Tom Presley or someone who worked at SLM at the time would actually know.

BTW - both my X340 and X330 came with the MPC1 Phase Shifter and MPC5 Power Overdrive modules, as they were supposed to;

I have two instruments with brass nuts, a Vantage and an Electra Pheonix Bass. I like them both but don't have a direct compaison to make (i.e. same instrument with bone or plastic nut). The bass in particular does have very nice sustain though.

After looking thru the catalog again, (The site 77 catalog) I came across a photo of an X350, X420 and a 2281 Elvin Bishop model all with brass nuts.
I can see the forest now that the trees have moved........
