Mick Mars was on the cover. That's a better ID than the date because I am unsure of the date, although I know it was Mick on the cover.

I just read it while in the studio last night. A pretty good article by Michael Wright (I think) who has written about SLM and MPC before.

I've read this a couple times through now, Written by Michael Wright, long time Vintage Guitar Contributor, and one of the few columnists who will talk about guitars not made by the big two! (possible exaggeration)

Basically he spends about three quarters of the article going over Electra/SLM history, mostly accurate, and mostly review for all of us Forum members. Apparently he didn't go to the Rick Derringer website, as he lists him as an endorser along with the ever present Peter Frampton (come on, besides the Catalog Cover, has anyone ever seen Peter holding an Electra? I think he got out of that contract as soon as he could) and some of his descriptions are less than flattering "the Outlaw, a Potato shaped guitar".

In the final quarter of the article he describes the MPC as a great example of Matsumoko craftsmanship, but then says that he doesn't think any MPC is particularly rare. In a rare episode for 'Vintage Guitar Magazine' (becoming more snobby and elitist with each issue...) the emphasis is on the value, not its collectability or how much you'll have to sacrifice to get one. It is good to see them getting some (any) press though.

I used it as a reason to send them a picture of my Electra collection, wondering if they'll publish it in their 'Readers Gallery' section? I hope so, I'm getting tired of seeing rooms full of Les Pauls. Mike.

I would be interested in knowing what happens with Vintage Guitar and whether or not your pictures get posted;

Please keep us updated with any new developments;

To each his own, as I got the same treatment at MyLesPaul.com
and the Forum Topic was "Electra LP":
