Update: My friend was able to crack the knob in half and completely remove it from the potentiometer. Time to get the pots replaced. :D

The tuners on your guitar have dust covers that come off easily and you can then tighten the gear on the shaft and this may fix your loose tuners.

Seems to me that the majority of your woes can be fixed with a simple setup that will cost you around $50 at a good music store.

If your dad does not think this is worth the cost, I will be more than happy to take this off your hands as I just gave my workingman to my kid who is trying to learn the guitar!
