Just bought a Crate Electra LP, don't know the year, it's kind of a goldish-brown burst finish with a set neck. It needs a new p/u toggle switch, I don't like the volume controls as they seem to be all or nothing. The pick ups are very hot, pretty dirty sounding which I like, though it would be nice to be able to clean up the tone a bit. Tone controls are virtually useless. Paid $200 for the guitar, a Line 6 spider II 30 watt amp, hard shell case, cheap ass cable (which I can't throw away fast enough) and some off brand distortion pedal.

Can anyone tell me more about this guitar, such as what wood it's made from, etc.? This is my second Electra (first is a 2242) and far from being my main rig. But is is kind of pretty, and I was thinking about fixing it up and passing it on. THANKS

Is the quality even comparable?

These are from the 90's right?

The crate guitars are a SLM brand. The Crate name came out after the Electra Line was discontinued and is still out there. Quality is hit and miss but overall not bad for entry level guitars. I have no idea where they were made most likely indonesia or korea. Hope this helps.

Korea, I believe.
I've seen them all over, I played one H/S/S strat copy that was really good.

I've seen a few with Phoenix necks, of at least the headstock shape.

The strat copies are the cheapest guitars of all time. Guitar center sells them for $40.

This was an older one.
Before the awkward new ones.

And I hate Guitar Center so that doesn't mean anything to me.
They are good for one thing: strings.

I got two cables there once and on each one one of the jacks was bigger than 1/4" (i.e. did not fit in guitar or amp). Talk about no quality control. I have to say they were good about it and took the rest of them off the floor. But still name brand strings only.

yeah, the first year of the Crate Electras had the Phoenix headstock shape to help the transition...

this one does not hve the phoenix style headstock, more like the open-book style, With CRATE in block letters above "Electra" in script. The finish on the headstock leaves a little to be desired. I'm also wondering if it has push/pull pots, which I guess I should just give 'em a yank and see ......

I'm ok on strings though. This GHS endorsement fits me just fine. I only use GC to find rare used pedals.

I've only ever actually played one, who knows what it was doomed to.

I just spoke to the luthier who went thru this rig thoroughly. The body is mahogony, with a maple "cap" (not the thicker cap like on a gibson, more like a veneer). He replaced the tuners which were very "cheap" two of which were coming apart. The toggle switch was also replaced. He cleaned all the pots and they are responding as they should when dialed up or down. all this, with setup and adjustment, and a new set of .009s for $56.

Not a bad investment for a set-neck mahogony guitar with high-output pick ups, considering I paid $200 for the guitar, a Line 6 spider two, distortion pedal and hard-shell case

picked it up last night, took it home, sparked it up and all I can say is "omfg!" unbelievable! I mean, it ain't exactly my LP standard, but the pickups are really hot and it plays really nice.
