Has anyone done any research on the Serial Numbers on Omegas and when they were made, i.e. do the 5000's relate to '77 etc.

Cheers
Jim

I think the Phoenix series and any Serial starting with a Letter, are the only ones to reliably use for dating...

for the older ones from the 70's you can get general timeframe by headstock style and logo scripting... sometimes even a hardware style change might be a clue....

to narrow it down really well, we'd need to record every model we could, that had a known true date of purchase with pictures of guitar and serial number, to begin a database of them, and start looking for patterns....

of course with the early 70's models, that all complicated by having some guitars made at different plants, with slightly different specs/logos, etc...

To play devils advocate, even with an original owner and paperwork, who's to say that the guitar in question hadn't been hanging on the wall for 2 or 3 years when purchased 'new'?

I agree with McB, go by the features if at all possible. Openbook headstocks would have been the earliest, for at least part of '76 they used the 'cutout' headstock, and by '77 all of the Omegas would have had the fan shape headstock. I believe by 1980 or 1981 the model was discontinued.
