I thought it would be good to have all the audio clips together where people could find them easy. Feel free to add your own. All my clips are live and dirty, I'm too lazy to overdub! I have a non-modified overdrive if you don't. It would be interesting to have that compared to the Thorny mod (I don't have). PM me if you are interested. My other module is the phase which you already have. BTW great idea to have the sounds available.

As far as sound, it is very similar to the X250 with the same switching capabilities and from what I can tell the same preamp installed, the difference being that the X250 has a separate bass control. The X150 seems to be a little brighter (read as trebly) than the X250. If there's enough demand I could throw one together.


I have two Power Overdrive modules, that sometimes I'll put one right after the other, which almost begins to approach the output of the 18 volt preamps in the X150 and X250, but not really. My impression of this module is kinda indifferent, the boost isn't that much, and boy does it add some noticeable hiss. I haven't had the pleasure of trying out a 'Thorny' overdrive, but would like to, maybe he solved the hiss problem and gave it some more 'umph'.

I picked up a Dynamic Fuzz recently in a lot, which frankly from the name I would have never sought out as I like the amp to do all of the work with respect to distortion. Thing is, that this module is not a fuzz box. It is a MEGA boost, probably on the order of 5 power overdrives!! This is what they should have called the power overdrive if you ask me (anyone else played with one of these?). Most amps will tend to compress the final signal once it reaches a certain stage, so the overall 'output' wont seem that much louder, but the clipping potential from this module is pretty mind boggling. I don't have any equipment to measure the output, but again, it's got some impressive output.

On a (common) Power Overdrive, when the knob is all the way down, the signal is also zero, so flicking the switch is like a Kill switch, and it takes it until about 3 or 4 until it's output is equal to the 'naked' pickups output. On a Dynamic fuzz, all the way down is exactly the same as the 'naked' pickup output and it just keeps going up from there. If I set my amp super clean and turn the dynamic fuzz on, I don't hear any synthetic fuzz or transistor distortion as the name would imply, even full out, it's just amplifying the signal from what I can tell. Anyone else agree with me? These are MUCH more useful than the Power Overdrive if you ask me, and again I think they were erroneously named. Mike.

Ok, the following link is to my band's Myspace page. There are 5 tracks that are all on our newly released EP called "Rock Music". No beating around the bush with the name. What you see is what you get.

We recorded all the songs live at a studio here in Iowa called Soundfarm. (Slipknot, Envy Corps, Radio Moscow, Damage Plan, Murderdolls, etc...) They have an amazing "live" room and it comes out in the quality of the drum sound. So for each song the drums, bass, rhythm guitars and some leads were all recorded live. Most tracks only took 3 or so runs to get what we wanted, in energy and performance.

We then went in and over dubbed some leads and accompaniment guitar parts at my house and our other guitarist house. Also all vocals were recorded in my son's closet... lol. The vocal recording quality is not the best, due to gear limitations and budget, but for a raw, live sounding rock n' roll EP they are fine.

Gear used:

Lead Guitar - Les Paul Studio, Peavey 5150 (rhythm and live leads), Orange Rockerverb 50 (overdubbed leads) various pedals and beer

Rhythm Guitar - Electra Outlaw, Orange Rockerverb 50, beer

Bass Guitar - Fender Precision Bass, Nemisis by Eden EN400 I believe (American Made older), beer

Drums - Pacific Drums and Percussion 4 piece cobbled together from pieces of my older kit and Ryan's older kit. (We, at the time. were waiting for his custom Ludwig to come, but alas it did not arrive in time.) beer

Vocals - voice, beer, whiskey

Here's my latest acquisition, a MPC4 Tank Tone. I knew this was some kind of mid boost, but put in more familiar terms, it acts like a wah wah pedal in a set position. Doesn't have a huge range, but definitely has some sweet spots. Track starts off with the Outlaw 'dry', ok plenty of distortion but no effects, and I do add some Reverb/Delay in certain spots during mastering to give it some depth:

Try to do a sloppy 'Money for Nothing' impression for what it's worth, but it sounds pretty darn close. Then I go into some basic riff and vary the center frequency with the control knob to give you an idea of its range. Some obligatory Ozzy thrown in for good measure and I end up with a riff played in a pseudo Brian May style, who always seems to have a middy tone to his leads, to me.

I'm trying to post recording of these modules because as much as people try to describe stuff it seems more natural to just listen to a clip and make your own judgement from that. Unfortunately I only have a couple of modules (4 different ones) but as I come across them I will continue to record samples for the site. Anyway, enjoy and tell me what you think, Mike.

Great to hear the stuff in action - Now how is everyone recording it? Zoom type recorders or board to disk???? Either way, sound quality is really good on all the clips.

I have a Yamaha 16 track digital recorder with a built in CD burner that I normally use, although this last one I was trying to post a video so it was recorded with the internal microphone on the Canon Powershot, which is actually a still camera with the ability to make movies, not the highest resolution, but it did alright I think.
