Does anyone have any experience with this?

I'm having the nut replaced and some frets filed on my Strat because of some buzzing that recently started. I'm no expert, but I believe the nut that is currently on there is plastic. I'm undecided whether go with bone or this LSR Roller nut, by Fender (Jeff Beck uses one if I'm not mistaken). I was told that heavey tremolo usage, the LSR would not bind the strings, where as after time, the bone nut eventually would. At this time, I do not use a heck of a lot of tremolo, but I do like idea of having it in case I choose to use it a lot more in the future.

Also, would anyone know if once this is installed, would it be possible to to back to a bone nut if I so decided?

Firstly, buzzing can sometimes be remedied by adjusting the truss rod, which is less intrusive than changing nuts and dressing the frets... Secondly, if your strings are binding at the nut, try some lubricant, I've started using this 'Nut Sauce' stuff (company name escapes me) and it's pretty good stuff, although not cheap.

Lastly, 'vintage' vibratos are what they are... they will never be as solid as a locking tremolo for holding pitch and taking abuse, never. I've held on to my '87 Charvel just for that reason, if I ever want to record or use a vibrato, I know that there is no substitute for a Floyd Rose. They are no fun to change strings on, but if set up correctly (spring tension equaling string tension) they will always stay in tune. I pulled my Charvel out at ElectraFest for the first time in two or three years... it was still in perfect tune (Redeye has my back on that!).

If you want to mod your Strat, go for it, but it's kind of like putting expensive rims on a Escort. Leo's design was revolutionary, but not the best for staying in tune.

Your tech should be able to tell you whether the nut surgery is reversible. Although I will say that I've seen roller nuts (and bridges) seize-up before... Anything else I can talk you out of? Sorry, do as you see fit, Mike.

To be honest, I'm not a big fan of modding guitars anyway so was only about 30% for LSR. And to be quite honest, 99% of my tremolo work is quite subtle anyway. I'd guess that about 50% of what I do with the tremolo can done on the fingerboard anyway. I just like having the option to really work it, know what I mean?

The LSR's are nice....on guitars already designed for their use, such as the Fender Strat Plus. However, if you roll at the nut you still have the string pressure sliding across the saddles....you could add roller saddles too, but then where would it all end? Besides, you'll have to file out for the LSR fit...not worth it. Just stick a graphite nut on there next string change and give that a try.

I'm enjoying those licensed Floyds with the string thru adjusters....you get to keep your balls smooth and quick if you pop a string.

As mentioned earlier, best check your neck first anyway.

I have never played a guitar with the LSR nut. There was a discussion on the project guitar forum which indicated they were good when the first came out but have slipped in quality since.

BTW just to highjack the thread there is nothing wrong with moding a guitar. They are meant to be played and if you can change a part to make it play better, go for it.

Thanks for all the input everyone. I went the bone nut about a week and a half ago. I just haven't been online much since I started a new job. The tech lubed the nut and so far, it's staying in tune...even after a couple of dive bombs.

Anyway, I'm completely happy and I went with the bone!
