I just purchased a 2252 LP off Gear Base. It has the "open book" headstock so it must be '73 '74 ot '75.
Curious thing though about it is that the truss rod cover say's"Custom" on it?
Red with gold hardware , (hardware is a bit tarnished). It had really slinky strings on it and the tone wasn't particularly outstanding (not at all like the X 410 I have). Maybe with 10's and a setup it will be better.......I hope so. The last thing I want to do is replace pups or anything that is original on the guitar.

I would post pics but I tried before and it just doesn't seem to work.

Setneck, if you haveing trouble posting pics, you can always post links. I use dropbox. Its free and easy. Just signup, do the download, put the files in the "public folder" and right click to get the link. Works like a charm.

Try new string and a setup. If that doesn't do the trick, I think new pups are OK as long as you save the old ones. The are musical instrumetns and are meant to be played. So do what it takes to make it playable.

The X410 'Jazz Strad' and a 2252 are two completely different animals man, I wouldn't expect them to sound very similar acoustically or through an amp. One is a pretty nicely made upscale Semi Hollow, the other an entry level bolt on copy... (no offense to all the 22xx owners out there).

I agree that you should put on a new set of strings and tweak the setup (don't discount lowering the stop tailpiece... that is were a lot of the down pressure on the bridge comes from) and go from there. If its something you want to hold onto, have a guitar tech check it over.

No offense taken, however your are incorrect. There is nothing "entry level" about the guitar as you simply cannot pigeonhole an entire line of guitars over several years. Just like any other guitar, each has to be taken and evaluated on its own merits. I thought the Electra forum of all places would be somewhere this was understood. After all, our guitars don't say "Gibson" or "Fender" on the headstock.

Sorry, didn’t mean to get your dander up! You make some good points. Strictly speaking in that era, I suppose the ‘Apollo’ guitars would have been considered the entry level guitars of the SLM line, not the 2200 series. Also I agree that the line changed a lot over the years, and it is generally accepted that at least three different manufacturers made the plethora of bolt-on LP’s that Electra offered in the early 70’s before the Golden Era of Electradom. It is also why many collectors consider the early 70’s models to be inconsistent… some are great players, others are mediocre.

Before I say something else that gets me into hot water, I was just trying to respond to the original post, which was that the 2252 didn’t sound as nice as a X410… and the first thing that popped into my head was that they are very different designs, most likely made by different manufacturers, and that it isn’t surprising that they sound different. I probably could have worded it more specifically, or diplomatically.

As far as disrespecting the Forum or Electra guitars, that was not my intention, and I think my last two years of purchases bear this out, I love ‘em, I think they have the best price vs. performance ratio you can find! Mike.

You're not in hot water and I don't believe you were disrespecting anyone - You have a right to your opinion and to say what you want, I just believe that each of these should be judged on their own --- sorry, the period key on this laptop is not working

The 2200's may be a step below the Omega's (and x410) because of the bolt on vs. set neck but they are still a lot better than most LP copies out there. I have a 2245 (wave headstock) that plays and looks really good. As a bonus, I like the way it sounds too! Nothing cheesy about it at all. As stated elsewhere, the open book headstocks are a little more of a crapshoot in terms of build quality, but I have yet to come across any model of Electra that is outright junk. BTW my truss rod cover also says custom on it.

The red is in the shop now ; my techie is setting it up. When I get it back, I'll post how she sounds with better strings.
I like the cool factor of this guitar. It looks "road worn" but it is the real deal.......not contrived.
I think I was lucky to snag this because I just don't see many of them.
Compared to the 410? well not really the same guitar is it? 410 plays & sounds as good as my 66 335. I have about 10 guitars and the Electra is the one I play the most. The binding alone is beautiful. The workmanship & quality is top-notch (even the f holes are bound) and the tone is that "honking-nasal vowel", whatever you want to call it blues sound. I have a Bogen PA converted to a Marshall 50 Plexi and then I've installed Yellow Jackets and EL 84's ....... I can't crank it yet (too load) but when I do, man what tone! I am waiting for a Faustine Phantom attenuator (months already) and when I get that I'll be able to get that tone without the "over-the-top" volume.

Lookin' good. As I said before - the bolt ons usually do NOT suck It comes down to personal pref, if it feels/sounds good - Then it's a keeper. Especially since you've put some bucks into it.

As long as a guitar is made well enough (price fits in there somewhere) and has the sound I'm looking for, I've never had a problem if it was a bolt neck or set neck. It has to look good too.

Looks exactly like the 2252 I have when I got it. Only reason it doesn't now is the different pickups I put in it. I'm thinking of putting the originals back in but not at this point.
