That's a nice looking slab of Rosewood. IMO Tusq would be a good choice.

I just saw this post;

I believe that most of the early MPC guitars had a plastic nut and no sustain block;

They also have the rare "SLM Peace Sign MPC" truss rod cover;

This all changed in late 1976 / early 1977 with the wave headstock and the inception of the brass nut, sustain block, and "MPC" only truss rod cover.

Mine also has two hinges and the Amphenol connectors for the MPC modules.

Yikes... well it was listed at $5 originally, I guess lots of people need one. I want to say the one I bought for the Outlaw project (Brass LP style) was like $12 shipped... but it didn't come in a fancy Electra package!

It was still at $5 when I saw it too....but it's at $25 now..

Small update :

I ended up getting one of the Les Paul brass nuts from Guitar Nucleus, and it fit nicely. Needed a small amount of shaping, and of course filing of the string slots for height, but it came out very well for a small amount of work. Slots were pre-cut to the perfect width/spacing, and none too deep for setting up. Thanks for the heads up on those RCSBlues!

Excellent question that unfortunately, I can't really answer

I played it for just a bit after bringing it home to see what worked and what didn't (none of the MPC effects worked due to a bad battery plug, 5 way was scratchy, etc...), but then I immediately took off the strings and began the repairs - which included the nut - so I can't really A-B it, sorry....

I can say, however, that it sounds great now.. , perhaps a bit brighter, but I can't really speak to sustain....

From page 8 in the 1977 Electra of the MPC LP style guitars it appears that the X340 has a plastic nut (if my eyes aren't tricking me) -
It's the one the guy is playing while sitting on a bridge and he has on headphones - probably using the Frognose MPC module.

The X340 on the bridge also has the older headstock;
The 2 other MPC's in the foreground have the newer wave headstock - and brass nut on the left and a plastic one on the right? I really can't tell from this pic:



Both the X330 and X340 MPC's that I have are 1977 models and have the brass nut and the bridge sustain block; great sustain on both; on the X340 I also use the compressor MPC module.

I think you are correct. I remember seeing an older x340 for sale somewhere that had the plastic nut and no brass block under the bridge, and the 'cutout' headstock. Pretty hard to tell from the catalog scan, but it does look like the x340 he's playing has a plastic nut as well.....

After seeing X110's question, I got to thinking that I may order up a Tusq and a bone nut and get them shaped up to do an A-B(-C?) comparison of all three and see which one I like best. I barely glued the brass one in place so she should come out easy, and now that the slot is cleaned up, changing them should be a breeze. I'll let you know what I come up with when I have some results...

Man, I wanna get one of those compressor MPC modules BAD! How does it sound with the flange?

Your x340 is beautiful BTW....I like the fine tuner bridge and the black knobs. Gives it a 'hotrod' look!
