Can anyone identify the mysterious pink guitar used by James Honeyman-Scott in this video? It might be a Firebird as someone suggests in the You Tube comments.

Certainly one of the best guitar solos from this era, 1979 the beginning of The Pretenders, and sadly too near the end for both the original guitarist and bassist:

According to the Pretenders Archives the guitar player owned a three pickup pink Firebird.

I guess it is a Firebird. For some reason it seemed to look too rounded off to be one, or maybe it was the three pickups that threw me.

I recently pulled out some old LPs and relistened to some of the guitar work to compare the sound of the vinyl versions to the digital ones. I bought the first Pretenders record because I really liked the runs on it versus the longer drawn out solos that seemed more popular at the time. Hearing them again on vinyl, they just sound better for some reason, especially when you consider the complex recording efforts described in the article. The magic just does not transfer to the digital or remastered versions.

Thanks much for the link to the great 1981 article from Guitar Player. Such a shame that "Jimmy" was dead only 14 months after the very informative and positive interview. Obviously he really appreciated his guitars, like we all do.

I agree; he was a much under-rated player; very tasty riffs and squirts and impeccable timing. I remember not too long ago trying to cover a couple of Pretenders songs and having to go to the web to find out what the hell he was doing in there; loads of partials was the answer!!

Odd looking guitar, though!

Ya, the three pickups threw me as well, but only because they were P90s. Of
course, not getting a good view of the headstock didn't help either.
