I just landed an Electra strat (posted in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=19&t=5254)

It came with some grovers instead of the original tuners. I think they reamed the holes bigger but luckily did not screw the tuners down. So the only screw holes are from the originals which means if there is a direct replacement there would be no unsightly additional holes. At first glance it looked like the stewmac economy 6 in a line tuners which I already have would be a direct replacement in looks and screw holes but they are just a bit off on the screw holes.

Does anybody know of some direct replacements? If there is not and I have to plug holes and create new ones I'd probably like to go with something other than economy tuners. Anybody have any opinions on what would work and look best on this headstock?

Would be nice to see originals in again but the originals were at best mid grtade or so. They would hold tune OK unless you do alot of string bending etc. I do not have any original tuners but maybe Ozark or one of the other members does. Good luck.

I'll 2nd the "midgrade" comment. I got my E-Strat new in 78, and in less than 2 years the tuners wouldn't hold. I replaced them with Shallers, that didn't line up with the stock mounting holes which I filled with a little glue and a maple toothpick! At the time my main concern was having a guitar in tune.

Mortarman is right,those early tuners with press fit covers were marginal at best. I currently don't have any around,but if it's gonna be a player I would definitely upgrade them. Some of the Klusons that butt up to each other should cover most the holes.
