Won this recently for 2 bills plus shipping, thought it might clean up nicely from the blurry pictures, and she sure did. Very respectable example with its share of dings, but no real paint missing:

The chrome parts are in great shape on this one. Nearly perfect headstock with two string scratches and pearl logo inlay:

Both the pickup and control cavities were painted, but the neck pocket was naked and it looks like Mahogany. Nice and light, in fact maybe a little neck heavy as far as balance. Neck seems a little chunkier than most of my Electras. Electronics are a bit scratchy and seem to be waking up from a long holiday. I like the placement of the pickup switch, out of the way, but close... cool! Overall very happy with this little guy, and pleasantly surprised at how well she cleaned up. Cheers, Mike.

Welcome to the world of the Workingman. For entry level guitars they are seriously nice. Mine showed mahogany in the front pup cavity. Its nice to have a guitar that plays that well but you didn't spend serious $'s on. Enjoy.

Great Axe. Mine has a great acoustic/unplugged sound as well as when plugged in. It resonates very loudly and has a nice bright tone. i like the black finish as it adds a little something to it and looks great with the chrome hardware. Congrats on the score.

Nice score!! A keeper for sure, very clean. Looks like it could use a set-up, but a great deal

Thanks guys, these black finishes show every little flaw and it's tough to get one that looks decent. I prefer the wood look myself, but had to take the plunge. It's interesting that in the price lists, the Black X290 was always $10-$20 more than the walnut finished X280..? Either the painting process was more expensive or the Mahogany caused that difference in price.

I have seen X280's that were Mahogany, in fact that Workingman with the Gibson pickups on eBay right now (may have ended..) on the east coast is Mahogany. It is my theory that originally both models were Mahogany, but the natural ones quickly changed to the Ash/Maple sandwich that we're familiar with... I may be wrong.

The pickups are MMK45's, but only have one lone conductor, so they can't be coil tapped without some delicate surgery to the pickups. Ah well, it sounds pretty decent as is. Again, I do like the placement of the pickup switch. And the neck is almost perfect, no dents or dings anywhere, and some great craftsmanship on the frets with no sharp ends or anything. Just a really cool player.

I just eyeballed the intonation as I was cleaning it, but it's pretty dern close as is. The action could be a little lower, but its not bad and I've been having too much fun playing it to adjust it just yet. Mike.

Great looking axe; glad it is going to be a player for you - right out of the box.

Congratulations!
