Now yer just being silly Corsair Production numbers for 1959 Bursts is actually 643, with about 1600 Sunbursts being built 1958-60. I've played 3 different bursts over the years and they are pretty freaking amazing. Something about wood that is no longer available and the 50+ years of aging the wood and pickup magnets. I've had a chance to A/B a '59 with my beloved 1981 Heritage 80 and I still love my 1981 but would toss it in the fireplace in a heartbeat for the '59. Listen, I love Electras, always have but comparisons to 50's Gibsons are a little silly in my books. For 500-1000 bucks 35 years later, these are some awesome laminated top guitars however.

But then again, if you figure the value of a dolllar back in 59' x the value of the 78' dollar divided by.............

Oh BTW, Frampton lost a collection of guitars in the Nashville flood along with the country stars.
He had 2 custom 57's 190 and 192 of the lot that he hand picked when Gibson remade his originals for him.
He said he would switch them out during the shows all night, playing those 2 LP's when the set called for it.
Both were trashed along with a lot more. They were set up at Sound Check rehearsing for the 35 anniversery tour when the flood hit.

I'd love a Frampton black beauty too, always loved that guitar. At least the guitars lost in the flood were relatively recent guitars that he can pretty much replace by trying a dozen PF models and picking 2. I had never heard of the cargo plane crash where he lost all his guitars in 1980 including the beloved "Comes Alive" '57 which was actually a modded 1954 Custom (http://www2.gibson.com/Products/Electri ... -Paul.aspx)...wow, lousy luck twice! I actually loaded a few of Peter's guitars on to a regional jet in Toronto bound for Nashville in the early 1990's, I may have actually handled one of the recreations.

Doesn't pay to be a guitar of Framptons, does it???!! I don't get the overwhelming love for any particular year of a guitar - I had a 58 Tele which got heavily modded and then moved on.....

is the LP love because they are so iconic and tied up with our collective imagery of rock and roll? Because you can't tell me that a 59 LP noise cannot be made by something else, especially these days with so much electronic trickery about??

And I'm sorry, but a build run of 48 trumps a run of 640 when it comes to exclusivity, surely?!

You make a good point. I love Les Paul's because of Ace Frehley & Jimmy Page. I fell in love with the image of the guitar before I knew the difference between guitars. I love the heavy crunch of that bridge humbucker, the substantial weight, the tone, the thickness of the '59 profile neck and of course still the look. From mid 70's to early 80's it was set neck Gibsons or nothing for me, some of my friends still have silly Gibson or Fender blinders on. Now I can appreciate any good guitar and have developed a strange affection for low end Strats that play & sound good.

And yes, there's Luthiers out there that replicate every aspect of 50's Les Pauls and Strats almost perfectly. Maybe there's something to the 50 year old wood and magnets, maybe it's mostly mystique and memories. I've played a few original burst that make me drool but also some hand made copies that are quite impressive.

Like Billy Gibbons might say, Don't matter what's on the headstock...if you like it, play it brother
