I've been looking for a H/S/H ever since Redeye loaned me his Dynasty a while back, almost pulled the trigger on a Rose X185, but when Ozark sent me these photos of his Spectrum FX in super shape, I couldn't refuse. Just a couple of scuffs, and totally original, down to the strap buttons and inverted knobs. The electronics are quiet and functional, and the scooped out heal is just gorgeous:




I believe these are the last version of the UBC MMK pickups with the bar pole piece. I do however need to find a trem bar, any ideas gentlemen? Pickups sound goooood, here's a video I already slapped together, tell me what you think

Made in May of 1986, I hope this doesn't begin another chapter of collecting for me, but I've been wanting to get those boinky H/S/H tones into my arsenal, and I couldn't pass up this example. Cheers, Mike.

Bendmaster FT, yes!! Stewmac 6mm for imports will sort out a bar for you, and be advised that there is a replacement for the funny wee string claws should you suffer the misfortune to break one....

Nice score. Great video also. Better watch out for the westone egas. I have both electra and westone egas and it's fun but tough. Great guitar.

Neck seems just a bit bigger than my older Electra Phoenix's, but the scooped out heal and (almost) endless tonal possibilities make up for that in my book.

I haven't checked into the stew-mac website for a trem bar yet, but I do appreciate the tip, and it's good news that it isn't some odd unobtainable piece. Thanks for the kind words guys.

nice. the scooped heel must've been started in '86. I don't think the '85 black FX I had a long time ago was scooped. looked just like the x199

I've also seen other FX's that did not have the bayonet join of the later models like Mike's there.

Westone also used that method of setting a neck on the Pantera x350 & x390's, the Trevor Rabin Signature model I, some Thunder model II's and the model III, as well as a few higher end bass models such as the Superheadless.

Really an interesting construction method which required a good deal of handwork afterwards to achieve the smoothness and blending you see there.

In 1986 a new neck joint was used, lacking the step of the previous joint, which resembled similar neck joints of other Electras. The new joint was deeply countoured, allowed unprecedented access to upper frets, and it was in most respects the same neck joint offered as a new feature in Matsumoku’s own Westones in 1983 in the UK and abroad.


As far as I have seen, all fours colors are listed as though all were available, but it appears that red and bronze (Silverstone) were available in the US with the old neck joint in 85, and white and black with the same neck joint were available at the same time only in the UK and abroad. In 1986, the neck joints changed and the colors switched- black and white on in the US with the new joints and red and gold the same way abroad.

Love your videos - the sound is very good - do you just use the cam mike or something better. I'm glad you are getting the Westone vibe - there are a lot of great guitars out there to add to your awesome collection. Do you go to the electrafest?

I use a Canon S5, which is a decent quality still cam with built in video ability. The microphone is ok, and sometimes you can hear the Limiter kicking in between the music and narration... what are you gonna do? Basically, it's the most convenient way to do it.

As far as ElectraFest, I 'coined' the phrase and hosted the first one back in 2009. Redeye and I are the only people who have attended all three events. The original idea was just to give people (me!) the chance to play models they may have not had the occasion to before, and from there it's taken on a life of its own!
