The seller was quite proud to let me know that he had been thoroughly researching how to properly pack a guitar for shipping, he was selecting just the right box, etc. Your name did not get mentioned by him Dave, and I decided to not bring it up, if only on the chance he might get screwy and fantasize about some cabal trying to talk him into something. Hopefully it will be here by Wednesday or so.

A local courier service I found in his hometown quoted me a rate of $42 to send it FEDEX with $800 insurance if it was packed by me. They also send out by UPS and that would have been $48 for the same. I am thankful that the seller was willing to be somewhat reasonable on shipping costs, now my hope is that he was as accurate in his auction description of the condition.

He has already made it clear he will not be leaving feedback for me until after I leave him positive feedback, which is a little disconcerting at this stage of the process. I completed payment via paypal within 1 day of getting his invoice from ebay so I feel justified in expecting my feedback from him to be both immediate and positive. Feels more like subtle coercion at this point.

Thanks again Dave. Still the #1 seller on ebay in my book.

Steve, really glad you got it !! Now, could you send it to me so I can admire it !!?? LOL --- really, all I did was encourage him to consider shipping and give him a tip or two, you did the work (and spent the $$) -- I'm just glad a Forum member got it !!

...the poor guy is already blind and you want me responsible for making him go deaf as well?

No thank you.

It hadn't arrived yet anyway. Seller sent an email the 24th saying it was shipped. He charged $60 and sent it Parcel Post, even though I had informed him of a shipping company in his town that would send it via Fedex for $47 with $800 insurance. No tracking number available either.

I don't mean to sound worried but the Pantera that Danagos sent from New Jersey via USPS PP got to me on a Friday and he dropped it off late on that earlier Monday. Hoping for good news tomorrow or I may have to contact the seller again.

Good news/Bad news Monday guys... :(

Good news is it finally arrived. And now, let's vent...

Bad news is the box had some tears and punctures in it, nothing major but breached nonetheless. Stuck my finger in one and felt nothing. Seller had packed it as follows...

Loose peanuts on the bottom, guitar sandwiched between single bubble wrap inside case slid in and then loose bubble wrap filled along the sides to center it, more bubble wrap on top and then taped shut. I was able to feel voids in the box as the bubble wrap sheets settled and shifted.

A couple minor nicks in the case and a small chunk taken out along an edge near one of the feet. Inside the case the guit seemed okay but once I got it home for close inspection...

At least a half dozen chips, marring scratches or nicks in various areas of the body. The join seam on the neck is very pronounced to the touch and there are definite areas of surface worming on the body backside, minor but definite. No where near the perfect museum quality decribed in the auction. His claims it was never played seem thin as well to judge by the worming alone. And I'm thinking it's gonna get worse...

The seller is maintaining that it was in pristine and unblemished condition when he packed it up and it had to have occurred during shipment. He says he took hi-res photos of "every inch "of the guitar before packing and wants to send them to me.

While there are 3 areas of the case exterior that have minor to slight damage none of them are near the damaged areas on the body. The inside of the case IS pristine, no nails or bumps along the lining or surfaces where these damaged areas exist on the guitar. One very obvious ding is almost centered on the point edge of the lower cutaway (which is in physical contact with NOTHING when the guitar is cased), so it seems impossible to me that his claims can be true.

Unless a postal employee opened the package and messed with it I can't see where these blemishes came from. I have never had to file a grievance with ebay before but unless this guy changes his tune I might consider it. Even with the damage it plays very nicely (of course) and I would like to keep it.

Any thoughts on what is a reasonable course of action on this?

Thanks!

What do the first three frets look like? The seller laid it on pretty thick with references to being in 'unplayed' and 'pristine' condition. If there is any fretwear at all, it seems as if he may have misrepresented the item. The buckle rash on the back seems like a no-brainer that the guitar had in fact been used, and that wouldn't have occurred during shipping.

I would take a deep breath and chose my words carefully when contacting the guy. If you feel you've been taken advantage of, return it and eat the shipping. Keeping the item and angling for some kind of partial compensation is usually a lost cause and could paint you as being as shady unfortunately.

I would take some high res macro pictures of my own, send them to the seller and wait for his response. Personally I don't seek out museum pieces, but if that is what you're were expecting, let him know. Our condolences Ice.

Very sorry to hear that, Ice. Sounds like it's simply "not as described". I'd file the claim through eBay and see if he offers anything other than accepting a return for a complete refund, including shipping. I wouldn't eat this one as is...it's just too flagrant in it's presentation versus actual.

I've had to accept a return for one simple, short...finish stress crack that I missed in expection. I described the guitar as mint and thought it was. Had to have the light and angle just right to see it.

Sorry to hear that Ice. My suggestion would be to document all the blems and dings etc and send them to seller asking how this was a mint unplayed instrument and see what response you get. If he does not come around then I would ask for a refund and return the item and file a complaint with ebay. I guess now we know why he lowered the price. The listing had specific references to the condition of the guitar so he should have a hard time explaining this one away I would think.
