This is a cool Bass and once you play it it will become your favorite for certain. The Active EQ is phenominal in range and boost. You will also find that a Gator case fits it perfect as that is what I found for mine and the Gator brand case is lightweight and sturdy and offers great protection and support all for around $70 or so. 8) 8) 8) 8)

Agreed - and the price is not completely nuts either - a bit high but not ridiculously so.

I think people just hold onto the phoenix cases because they fit so many other basses well...

seems most of the basses I get come with a Gig bag or nothing, but most projects seem to folow that scenario...

I agree with Arthur on the Gator cases... I've had a few, and they are a good deal...

when I did my Outlaw restoration I bought a hardshell case for it to help protect it when it sold...

OK - well I bought it - couldn't resist. Now I'll probably need to sell my X650JB - anyone interested?

The X640N arrived today and what an embarrassment of riches! I have apparently struck gold. There are a few minor dings - you have to look very closely to find them - brass saddles and bridge look almost new and the tuners are unpitted and shiny. It's also set up beautifully. I doubt I'll change a thing on that. The electronics all work and sound great. Aside from scratchy pots, which will get some Deoxit real soon, and a little strange discoloration by the battery compartment (which seems to be under the finish), it just about could not be in better shape. Just beautiful and I think it plays as well as the either of the 2 Music Man basses I recently sold. I was pretty surprised to find there are 2 9V batteries powering the active circuitry - that's a lot of boost! There seems to be about a KAJILLION different sounds I can get with this bass and I'm a little chagrined to admit I haven't figured out exactly what all the switches do yet (anyone???) BUT - I've neglected bass playing for many years and this instrument may just force me to pick up again. Oh, and it has a really nicely figured Maple neck with undetectable fret wear. The Brass nut on this is even cut properly.

Now, I thought my X650JB was about unbeatable in terms of value - and it's a fine instrument in it's own right, but the active circuitry on the X640 series really raises the bar. I'd like to see some pictures of the stained, black and white versions of this. If anyone has them please post a shot or two.

Being a relative lame-o at playing bass (but still enjoying it), I only need and will keep 1. This is the one.

Very nice Bass indeed. I love mine. You are correct in the fact that the Active circuit is awesome. This Bass has unending tonal boost and variations in sound.I have the white and natural models and love them both. Controls are as follows: master Volume,Freq Select and mid-range parametric cut and Boost(more treble or more bass boost) and tone. Three switches are for series/parallel pickups, In phase/Out of Phase for pickups and Active EQ on/ Off
Here are my two Active EQ Basses:

As you can see there are differences between the Electra and Phoenix models but both are great Basses

Pics didn't come through Arthur. Do yours have a center detent on the middle knob? It's a nice touch. You're right to love yours. All I can say is Holy Boostability Batman!! Seriously, the active EQ is better than the Music Man basses - at least the range seems wider. It may be noisier though - I'll know more about that after the Deoxit treatment. A tone monster indeed!

I see the pic now - really nice looking neck and I like the brass knobs too. Those are real gems.

Yes there is a center detent on the boost range knob and it is a huge help when playing and adjusting on the fly. These are great Bass models and one of the best next to the Outlaw and Corsair models. These have the best tonal range I think but the Outlaw is close as it offer the 5 way and pole piece adjustments for the lows but these offer a way to change ton or boost Bass or treble on the fly with the control knob. Awesome tone for days and a really fast comfortable neck also. :hyper: :hyper: :hyper: 8) 8) 8) 8)

Here's my X640s 'stained' sunburst Bass, I like the early pickguard versions better personally:

I really like the stain finish the most. I also like the non-pickguard version better esthetically. I'm not sure about the different pickup configurations but it seems the newer version might get some more variation in tones. It might be an illusion but the frets look bigger on the earlier versions as well.

The non-pickguard version looks better, or cleaner, or more refined I guess I should say, but I think the pickup placement is better on the pickguard version. The closer to the bridge you get, the thinner the strings sound, which is a bit counter intuitive for a Bass. Those split coil P-bass pickups are thunderous also, its not often you see a pair of them on a bass. I like it, I think I'll keep her for a while. Mike.
