Fantastic - don't stop with saves just because your wife wants you to - your work is too good and you owe it to the general public to continue. I think it's the least you can do. It looks really nice. Was that your first full size fret job? Any tips?

I redid frets on the MPC bass I got from dr_dave a while back... I still have not completed the frets on the mandolin...

tips?

if you want a factory like job, take it to a pro... and not me

but...

0. remove old frets slowly and put a backbow on the neck if you can to lessen the probablility of damage while removal takes place...
1. good cutters are a must
2. really make sure you get any particles out of the slots
3. when cutting to length, pay close attention to how they will fit with the edge of the fretboard. binding, no-binding, tripple binding, etc...
4. fret end filing... this time around a used a metal board protector that fit over the frets (one at a time) butI think I woudl try and do some prep before even pressing them in...
5. if sanding the fretboard, and removing a good portion, be sure to recut the slots to deepend them.

Stewmac had a good picture tutorial...

the MPC bass had the tortoise binding, and this one had none... I think I prefer the bound ones, as the ends of the frets are less noticeable.

for the mandolin, since the binding needs replaced, I'll be cutting the fret ends flat and even with the edge of the naked fretboard, then I will install the binding and file the binding down to match the frets...

All good tips - I especially liked the back bow one. I've thought about taking on a re-fret many times but always chicken out. I guess I don't have any more excuses now.

I believe the backbow tip was given by another member here.... since these are projects I've. Just oicked up I didnt feel i had much to lose by trying a fret job. Especially this one....

...throw me a frickin' bone here, people...

it's all re-assembled now, but need to get some strings.... I stripped down the paint off the neck plate, and triend to mostly remove the name that was engraved there, and then I repainted it, along with the screw heads... will get final pics when strings are on....

I unassembled, and leveled the frets. much nicer now, though I forgot to do a better cleanup and polish the frets, so they are a bit "grabby" now

I like that the scale is identical to the Quantum/Rails...
