Hi, I'm a newbe here, but I like the site. I have a Electra X730 ser. no. 13896 and I was wondering if anyone can tell me what year it was built. I acquired it around 1980. I am the second owner, but the guitar was still packed in styrofoam in the hard case. The original owner got it as a promotional gift from the Electra Co., but died before he could play it. I played it in bands in the 80's and 90's. I don't play in bands anymore, but I play it regularly. It is in excellent condition.

If that serial number is on a foil tag, you can't really date the guitar by that number. Some people have been lucky finding a build date inside the MPC cavity or on cabling and inspection tags inside. Else wise, you can only tell general dates like when production started and stopped on this model. (In this case 1977-about 1981).

Welcome aboard, good story, and thanks for sharing. The Outlaw didn't change over the years like a lot of the models, the headstock is unique and doesn't change, the hardware was consistent also. On some of the MPC's, there is a date ink stamped into the battery pull cloth, not always there, but give it a look.

Being a Mahogany neck-through design, these original guitars were arguably some of the most expensive guitars Electra offered, and if you can get over the aesthetics, they play very nice. Post some pics if you get the chance, as maybe there's something unique about your 'promo' model!
