The strings are compensated. Look at the side view, how the nut hangs over the edge of the fingerboard. The G is compensated. It is a miniature "inverse" to the standard bridge shape at the other end, so it should result in an overall "flattening" of the shape. Not flattening in the pitch sense, but in the alignment of the saddles. Neither one should be in a row straight, but they will mirror each other. That is why it works well. When you think about it, it makes a lot of sense. If there is compensation at one end it would likely be required at "both" ends. So this helps to "share" that overall compensation.

Width you will have to measure. I have three installed on my current guitars but I have never needed one on any of my Electras. The real difference is in the intonation perception between lets say a barre chords, and a traditional "C", "G", and"D" chords. If you set intonation on some guitars the barre chords sound fine, but the G or C may sound really out. Some people compensate and don't know it with their tuning. But this way is a lot better. It completely cured the problem I had with that particular dean. It is one of my favorite guitars now. I have a washburn with Feiten tuning built in. It uses a similar method but actually it actually moves the nut slot. I'd rather not do that. They actually have copied the idea of a "shelf nut" recently. I know earvana was the first to market that "shelf nut" idea and it is standard on some higher end ESPs and LTDs. I am sold on its effectiveness. If you don't like it, well, you have not wasted that much. I just can't imagine not liking it. I don't notice it is there, but my chords all tune a lot better to each other. After the intonation is reset on your bridge, I don't even have to compensate the tuning (you are supposed to compensate the tuning slightly for a Feiten, and some higher end tuners have Feiten settings for them) - I just tune with a standard tuner.

Here is a shot of the 940 and 310 although I am going to change the bridge on the 940 for better string spacing like the 310. Ill post a few more if can get my regular camera working this was taken with my Itouch which usally does a better job.

I am also going to be replacing the 50k pots with 500k, pickups sound good some seam a little muffled.
