Got trade money at guitar center. I'm debating between a maple super rock, an outlaw, or a Yamaha sg 45. I have a 72 super rock cherry burst. I don't care for the thick neck. The maple sr is a 76 or later. Opinions?

Well as you already have a Super Rock, unless you are doing a fair amount of live playing where you want to be able to switch to the same guitar, I would look at the other two. It looks to me like the Outlaws tend to go for more so if the $$'s are equal. I would go that way. That said the Outlaw is a unique instrument and you people tend to love it or hate it. MIJ Yamaha's are very nice. Not a bad dilemma to have.

The Outlaws are solid guitars in every respect. They do have rather hefty necks though. Grover bullseye tuners, good pickups, 5 position switch and MPC capability would make it an easy choice for me over the Yamaha

What does the 5 way do? Split coils and phase right? Does it play passive without a battery?

Yes - the battery only powers the MPC modules.

How chunky would you say the outlaw neck is? Bigger than a x420?

Five way does not do coil split, tap or any other coils involved switching. You should check out the old page to see exactly what it does.

Where in the PNW do you live? If you are anywhere close to Seattle, you can try out my x710. PM me if interested.
